Jeremy, another question for you. How would you convert a 23.976 clip to 29.97 but keep it progressive. I have some 720p30PN footage from the HVX 200 and would like to keep a progressive sequence for the web. I have a the project for the most part done, but was just given a 720p24 clip and a 1080p24 clip. I’d like to convert them both to use in my 29.97p sequence.
If by taking a 23.98 clip and adding in pulldown creates an interlaced clip as mentioned above, can it create a progressive one? And what would be the best to use for this? AE? Compressor? I know FCP will add in the wrong pulldown, unless you use a 720p59.94 sequence (which we’ve spoken about in the past). But I’d like to stay at 29.97.

Depending on what format the camera shoots in and just like the Canon 5D and 7D, I’d probably just transcode everything to ProRes and edit away. Thanks for the comments. I’ll check out that link and look into these cameras.
Jason, yes, the HVX is quite bad in low light situtations. And for most weddings and events, the receptions are almost always dark.
I’m going to look into the 7D and see what recording times you can get. The other thing I don’t like about them, is there’s no XLR connection for external mics. Or is there? I curious about mounting a good external condenser mic to this.

Thank Jeremy. Last question. I’ve changed to field dominance to Upper as you stated. Playback is good on both the TV as well as in FCP Canvas on the computer monitor. Although, with this now as interlaced, when I step through frame by frame, every 5th frame is a dup. Is this normal and is this a 4:1 cadence? What does this mean if anything?

Sorry, maybe I should rephrase that. Does adding in 3:2 pulldown automatically give you an Interlaced movie. Or could it be progressive?

In Quicktime Pro, I step through frame by frame and I think I see 3:2 pulldown. 3 clean frames followed by 2 interlaced frames (images 1 and 2 below). However in FCP those interlaced lines are huge, ie the comb effect. So by setting the the Field Dominance to Upper, all should be good?
But why then does FCP and Compressor both interpret the clip as Progressive 29.97? If in fact it is interlaced 1080?
If they’ve edited in 1080 at 23.98 Progressive and export their master, then add in 3:2 pulldown, do you get what I have here? A 1080 29.97 Progressive (or Interlaced) file?

(17*60)+49=1069 sec.
200 MB/1069 sec.=.1871 Mb/s
.1871 Mb/s = 1533 Kb/s
1533-128 (audio) = 1405
So 1405 is my bit rate to limit too. Right? Thanks for the help. That calculater link was a bit confusing. I wasn’t sure if I should use bits or bytes so I plugged in your ex. to check. Its Megabytes and kilobits. I think.

Michael & John, thanks for your posts. I’ll forward that info on to our post house as they’re the ones with equipment. But you’d think they’d already have these updates. Go figure. Either way, I just learned the hard way cause the ProRes 1280×720 30p file they sent me had 44.1 audio and the new audio mix from our awesome music house was 48 khz., which through the audio & video out of sync again after using Jeremy’s help to fix that.
Anyway, after a simply audio conversion from 48 to 44.1 and conforming the video to 29.97 in Cinema Tools, all is well. Man that was a huge pain in the arss! Audio and video match perfect and we have a very happy client. Thanks again.

Second question, this is 30fps, can you make DVD at this frame rate for playback on TV’s? Or does it need to be 29.97? And if so, I can conform to 29.97 using Cinema Tools right?
I believe 30fps is ok for computers and web but I know that might not be the case for TV. This is not for broadcast but will be shown at public events via DVD or other playback. And does the sample rate of the audio matter? 44.1 vs. 48?
