December 17, 2008 at 2:59 am in reply to: Color Correction Monitors. JVC vs. Panasonic?Spending the money is not really an issue. I’m already using a low end Vizio, but will Panasonic plamsa or something else give me good enough color for clients wanting a good quality DVDs and web videos? You mentioned, wait for next year, but what is good solution for now. Needing a good color accurate monitor is what we need to make our products look good.
We have (4) 30′ inch cinema displays. I’m using (2) Eizo displays that produce great color, if not better than the apple cinema displays. Are these good enough for web and DVD work. I know there only computer monitors, which is why I was looking into a good, cheap broadcast monitor. But will these work for me. Whats the best calibration method?

I’m currently running this card and love it. I monitor out to a consumer TV as well but the color is not good. I would suggest a good LCD broadcast monitor. I do not trust my output to my 37″ TV. Its only there for playback, broadcast and title safe as well as my client monitor.
My audio is run through a Mackie 1202 and has been perfect. No sync issues. Although you will need to set the Frame Offset to about 4 under System settings, Playback control. I think BM tells you 7, but that was off for me. I recommend a good set of powered speakers like M-Audio.
HDMI is more a consumer plug which I think converts your YUV color to RGB or vise versa. Not sure which. If I were you, I’d use the component outs to a broadcast monitor for accurate color. HDMI and a consumer TV is not a good idea for color corrections or grading.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Noah. BTW, your DVDs have been super helpful. I think I’m a lifetime subscriber. Anywho, I just missed this post while I was responsing to John. I think for this I’ll stay with what I know, SD DVCPro 50 480i and work with HD 720p on the next project. Those film mode frame rates are wicked nice too. Thanks for the response.

Actually the preference is up to us. I’m going to supply a 16:9 DVD but with DVDSP you have to option to tell it to letterbox 16:9 into a 4:3 window. And if they want 4:3, I’ll just crop the 16:9 to center cut.
I think with this project I’m going to stick to what I know, SD 480i60i. HD is not important to them right now, and this is a one time deal. But I think in the future I’m going to start shooting 720p24pn as you suggested. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that lately. Thanks for you help. Much appreciated.

Yep, all images are RGB and 72 dpi TIFs and PNG files. I know FCP and be a bit testy with JPEGs. Does the image dimensions have anything to do with it? Some are over 1500 pixels or 20 inches. I’ve tried to attached an image. It was supposed to be a color image and clear but it came out B&W with horiz lines through it. And thats just the tip of the iceberg compared to what some of the others looked like.

Sweet. Thanks. I was going to ask if a card would do that. I have the Intensity Pro card. I’ll look into it. Thanks for your help.

24p is perfect for DVD and web usage correct? What if I want to do this same thing for another project and output for broadcast? Do I simply output my 720p24pn sequence to Compressor and set the frame rate to 29.97? Is that adding in the correct pulldown to conform to broadcast TV standard? Or should I go to 720p60? Cineman tools? I don’t have the ability to output to tape. I’d have to downconvert to an uncompressed single and send to dub house.
What is the correct process for this?
