If my deliverable is simply a SD DVD, what is my best way to shoot and edit? How will my Motion graphics look? BTW, we’re using the Panasonic HVX200.

Shoot 480i60i, edit in the same codec and output to DVD at 29.97 (I have used this for a previous internal project and it looked great) or

Shoot 720p24pn, downconvert to 8-bit uncompressed 24p, edit and output to 24p DVD or

Shoot 720p24pn, edit in the same codec, the using compressor, downconvert and create my 24p MPEG 2 files without conforming to another codec (such as uncompressed)

Which of these makes the most sense? What do the pros do to create an SD DVD?

Oops, I’ve also posted this in the FCP forum, but that was before I found this Panasonic forum.

Do they want 4×3 or 16×9 for the screen format? I’d shoot in HD so when this client starts using HD it will be available as an archive. That said, I’d probably shoot 720PN and edit in a 23.98 timeline for an eventual 24P DVD.

If they want a 4×3 screen, be sure to shoot 4×3 safe in the middle of your 720PN 16×9 screen (if you go this way). If you shoot SD, I’d suggest 16×9 since that will make it easier to upconvert to HD later.

I’d go 720p/24pN. It looks nice, is easy to work with in post, gives you access to all speed modes and a lot of extra resolution to work with in post. The downconverted SD/16:9/24p DVD will look great.

Actually the preference is up to us. I’m going to supply a 16:9 DVD but with DVDSP you have to option to tell it to letterbox 16:9 into a 4:3 window. And if they want 4:3, I’ll just crop the 16:9 to center cut.

I think with this project I’m going to stick to what I know, SD 480i60i. HD is not important to them right now, and this is a one time deal. But I think in the future I’m going to start shooting 720p24pn as you suggested. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that lately. Thanks for you help. Much appreciated.

Thanks Noah. BTW, your DVDs have been super helpful. I think I’m a lifetime subscriber. Anywho, I just missed this post while I was responsing to John. I think for this I’ll stay with what I know, SD DVCPro 50 480i and work with HD 720p on the next project. Those film mode frame rates are wicked nice too. Thanks for the response.
