So I’ve receive our finished documentary from our production house. It was exported at 1280×720, 30 fps with 44.1 khz audio (don’t ask me why). Anyway, after needing some re-work on the music score, I’ve asked the production house for a dialog only audio file so we can mix in new music. Well the new audio file is 48 khz and does not sync with the video. so I thought it might be that it was 48 and not 44.1 to match the ProRes file. so they sent another one at 44.1 and it still does not sync.

Why would audio be in sync for the first few minutes then slowly become more and more out of sync as the film goes on?

    Can anyone help with this?

I’ve also tried conforming the master file to 29.97 via Cinema Tools and that did not work either.

Delete the audio out of the FCP project/timelines. You then have to create a 30.0 easy setup (not 29.97). Once you create that easy setup, select it, then save and quit FCP.

Reopen FCP, and reimport the original audio file. it should now be in sync if the post house really edited @ 30.0

dude, you da man! I would have never figured that out. it worked I have sync back. stupid 5D cameras gotta make it all difficult n stuff! JK.

Second question, this is 30fps, can you make DVD at this frame rate for playback on TV’s? Or does it need to be 29.97? And if so, I can conform to 29.97 using Cinema Tools right?

I believe 30fps is ok for computers and web but I know that might not be the case for TV. This is not for broadcast but will be shown at public events via DVD or other playback. And does the sample rate of the audio matter? 44.1 vs. 48?

[Matt Campbell] “And if so, I can conform to 29.97 using Cinema Tools right?”

Yes. This is the fastest (and lossless) way to do it and it needs to be 29.97, not 30.0.

It will change the overall length of your project.

[Matt Campbell] “And does the sample rate of the audio matter? 44.1 vs. 48?”

Not too much, but it’s better to work @ 48k and receive 48k files. DVD will make it 48k.

Yes the sample rate matters. Although the older firmware of the Canon 5D recorded 44.1khz, the new firmware has fixed that because 48Khz is the industry standard for digital video.

FCP doesn’t handle non 48khz audio nicely and anything for broadcast needs to be delivered as 48khz so the best idea is to convert the 5D footage from H264 to an edit codec like ProRes AND change the sample rate at the same time.

Also audio from a professional post house should always be delivered as 48khz. Best to always manage a workflow with audio at 48khz as FCP is poor at mixing sample rates and this forum has hosted a litany of complaints about sync and rendering audio in FCP.

Note, Canon has a firmware update for this camera that makes it record at 29.97 and not 30. You should install this update.

Michael & John, thanks for your posts. I’ll forward that info on to our post house as they’re the ones with equipment. But you’d think they’d already have these updates. Go figure. Either way, I just learned the hard way cause the ProRes 1280×720 30p file they sent me had 44.1 audio and the new audio mix from our awesome music house was 48 khz., which through the audio & video out of sync again after using Jeremy’s help to fix that.

Anyway, after a simply audio conversion from 48 to 44.1 and conforming the video to 29.97 in Cinema Tools, all is well. Man that was a huge pain in the arss! Audio and video match perfect and we have a very happy client. Thanks again.
