The LaCie d2 500GB, Big Disk 1TB and all Bigger Disks have variable speed fan that kicks in when needed.

Shame on me 🙂 You are correct, the latest driver allows the Fast mode to use the 5 drives. Good thing I am not in tech support 🙂

In that case I don’t know why only 4 LED are blinking – I’ll check with Product Team. Performance is still expected to be better in JBOD mode.

    Hi Bill,
I confirm that the S2S is faster in JBOD (with drives striped through OS X Disk Utility) than in the automatic fast mode.

In JBOD you utilize all 5 drives. Fast mode utilizes only 4.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    Hi Vincent,
Hope you are doing well. Just want to react to your comment.
Our products are being used (and abused:) everyday by thousands of pro-users in the video and music industry. We work hard to achieve the best reliability possible. Considering the number of drives that we ship every year, it’s only normal that you hear more often about LaCie than other manufacturers of ext. drives.

If “cheap” was a reference to our pricing, it’s simply because our volume allows us to be more aggressive.

    Hope this helps.
    Mat @ LaCie.

  • Yo Dog Food 🙂
If you had not been a long time member, I would have thought that you were just a WD rep trying to promote your products 🙂 You are excited by your latest purchase and have a clear preference for a manufacturer and that’s fine. But I have to comment your “truth” 🙂

    – Fact is that LaCie d2, Big Disks and Bigger Disks feature an aluminum casing. WD drives feature a plastic casing.
    – LaCie d2/Big/Bigger drives are assembled in Oregon. The quality of assembly is impeccable and I invite you to visit our facility anytime you want.
    – You said that you did not pack the drives very well. Any kind of hardware that is shipped with poor packaging would get damaged. We ship thousands of drives everyday all over the world to resellers and end users and obviously they arrive in good conditions.
    – We are always developing new products for the Mac platform (17 years and going strong). Other manufacturers are coming late to the Mac, following LaCie’s footsteps. Imitation is the best compliment.

  • Hi Dog Food – Sorry your LaCie drives got damaged.
The LaCie d2, Big Disk and Bigger Disks are made in sturdy metal. When shipped with their original packaging or anything comparable (where the drive does not move around the box or case), they can handle as much traveling as you want.

Hi Sean – Thank you for your response. We’ll continue to work hard to meet or exceed those higher standards. Customer feedback is always valuable to us. If you go to Macworld in January, come say hi!

Sean – I am sorry I responded to Mark earlier. My suggestion about calling Tech Support was for you.

Mark – Any customer with a defective product is not a happy customer. I am not doubting your feedback regarding tech support. Sometimes phone stats don’t reflect personnal experiences. Let me know if I can help.

Our tech support has no problem taking care of customers who have power supply issues, whether the drive is under warranty or not. In Sean’s case, it seemed that the boards might be fried so it’s the reason why I wrote “if your drives are under warranty”.

I did the google search that you suggested but I need to point out that google list all the web pages that contain the words LaCie – Big – Disk – Spin – Down – Issues. Except that those words don’t have to be in the same sentence so most of those pages are not about actual spin down issues with our products.

In regards to my participation to those forums. It was originally because of my personnal interest for video editing. It turned out that sometimes I could help some people with answers about LaCie drives. The Cow is nice enough to let me post. Not a big hidden agenda in the end. I like talking with customers, whether they have good or bad feedback.

It’s because we care about our customers that we have been in business for 17 years and shipped more than 2.5M drives last year. We keep working hard to make good products at a good price. Feel free to email me at mgasquy@lacie.com. I’d be happy to help you out if I can.

    Thanks.
    Mat
