    Hello Mark,
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with our drives. It sounds like the drives were working fine before the power supplies mix up. When you manufacture a lot of different products, you tend to use similar small parts such as power connectors. I understand where the confusion could come from. I am sorry it happened to your editor.

If your drives are under warranty I would suggest that you contact our tech support (support@lacie.com or 503.844.4503. Tech Support is in the US and wait time is usually less than 5 minutes. Turn around for a repair order is usually 1 day.

On a side note regarding product reliability and online forums. We are more visible than other manufacturers so there are more people using our products and posting comments. If you do a search for “LaCie” on The Cow for the past 3 months, you will not find many posts about issues with our drives. Most negative comments would be from the same customers who had a bad experiences in the past. Considering that we shipped more than 2.5M external devices last year, we continue to experience an extremely low defective rate.

Feel free to email me directly if I can help you in any way.

    Hi,
Just wanted to correct some information about LaCie drives.
    – LaCie Big Disk 1TB has a fan with settings that automatically vary depending upon temperature
    – Same for d2 500GB and all Bigger Disks

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
To set up a RAID 0 configuration between 2 or more drives, you can simply use OS X Disk Utility (it’s free, part of OS X). Once you have your drives connected, open disk utility and you can set up your RAID in a couple clicks.

“DUAL d2 Extree (2ch) means that it’s 2 LaCie d2 HD in a RAID 0 configuration across 2 channels. Probably 1 drive connected to the built-in port and 1 drive connected to a FW800 card.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello Rick,
I am sorry to hear that you had a problem with 1 LaCie drive.
The drives inside the Bigger Disk are PATA, not SATA. You would not be able to put the mechanisms in a SATA raid enclosure.

Your drive is under warranty so I would sugged that you contact our tech support. With the fan and the aluminum enclosure, it is unlikely to be a heat issue, even without AC in the room.

    Thank you.

Actually you should also mention the comments posted under this blog. When the drive was sent back to LaCie, the problem was quickly identifed: Firmware had simply not been updated.

Here is the last post from this customer on his blog:

“Latcho, have you tried contacting LaCie customer support? They were really helpful to me.
They mention the clicking problem on their FAQ. I’m debating closing comments to this post. It’s not really the proper place for this venting. They don’t have a discussion board on the LaCie site, but my blog really isn’t one either…
They sell like 50 bajillion drives a year, and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that it’s a very rare problem – it’s just that we’re more vocal about the problems now. Anyway, my drive is working great (touch wood). If you have a problem, get in touch with their customer support folks. Give them a chance to fix it before giving up.”

A simple advice from this story: make sure that you have the latest firmware, especially when you upgrade your OS.

Actually LaCie products are a lot LaCie 🙂 All design and boards are all unique to LaCie. We don’t use generic chhinese/taiwanese casings and boards like most companies in the US. And we use mostly seagate (seagate bought maxtor), western digital and hitachi.

    Hi Francois,
I hope that you are doing well. Could you email me your serial number? My email is mgasquy@lacie.com. South Africa is handled by our France office so I will check with them. They confirmed that Maxtec is an excellent distributor so they were surprised to hear about your situation.

    Thanks.

May 17, 2006 at 11:55 pm in reply to: Storage Drive

    Hi Neil,
LaCie is working with a lot of Pro Video resellers and Pro Video users. With more than 2M units shipped last year, we are the most visible storage company in the video market and that’s why you will hear more comments about us. Hardware products can always fail but we work hard to keep the risk to a minimum.

If you have a couple d2 drives, you can just reformat them (if the drives have not been used since June 2005, please update to the latest firmware https://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/ scroll down the page).

One of our latest drives, the LaCie Little Big Disk, received a AIM Award at NAB.

    Thank you.
