It’s very interesting reading everyone’s experiences here. I think that it boils down to what works for you. My experience has been tarnished by 2 problems with these SDHC cards, which in the end were not catastrophic. Anyway, that was enough for me not to risk them any more. I decided that £800 for 2 16Gb Sony SxS cards was a price worth paying for the greater peace of mind and using the cards that were specifically designed for the camera. Let’s face it the camera costs £6k for starters, so why economise on such a vital component?

The other day I accidentally switched the camera off whilst it was still recording (an interview got interrupted). Realised as soon as I had done it. Switched back on (in media mode) and footage all fine. Had I done this on an SDHC card who knows what would have happened to the previous 30 mins of footage? In the heat of the moment these things do happen – the 10 sec rule would catch me out too, I know.

So, yes, I had my fingers burnt and will not risk them again. Just my experience, for what it’s worth! Martin.

  • Hi Akbar – I was in the same situation as you a few weeks back with a 16gb Sandisk. As with you, I suddenly got the media needs to be restored message and of course, it wouldn’t restore. Also, the card was not recognised by the camera. However, when I purchased the MxR adapters, I bought the usb card reader. In my case, I got the card to mount using this. However, I couldn’t copy the BPAV folder across as the formatting seemed to have got corrupted. By extracting the MP4 files individually from the BPAV folder I retrieved all the clips except for the one I was filming when I got the error. Every time I attempted to access this clip, the computer ‘hung’ which suggested a format error.

I don’t know whether you had just the one (large) clip or a series – if so (a few clips) I think that you should be ok.

Truly horrid situation, I know. I have now stopped using the SDHC cards and adapters and have splashed out on 2 Sony 16Gb SxS cards. Can’t afford the risk on a job and gives greater peace of mind.

    Good luck – Martin

Yes, my adapter has connections on both sides. So hopefully this should go straight into the XS17?

    Thank you Olof and David.

I have seen lots of positive comments about the Fujinon XS17x5.5BRM, so will probably go with this. Presumably, David, I just use the supplied adapter (which came with the camera) and off I go? Does the power for the zoom servo etc. come through the internal connections on the outside of the lens (like on the supplied lens)? Also, presumably I can plug a normal remote zoom demand into the usual place under the lens?

    Thanks – Martin.

[Michael Palmer] “I have a dozen 16 gig Transcend SDHC class 6 cards and so does the production company I work mainly with and I would trust all 24 cards on any project. IMO there is no risk if you have properly tested each card and recorded to them a few times before use on a paid gig. If JVC can incorporate them into there XD Cam EX licensing thats good enough for me.”

That is good news about the Transcend cards.

Yes, I’ve always been super-careful about removing cards / turning off before the red light has gone off The strange thing about the last failure is that the camera was actually recording at the time – it had gone for about 40 secs or so and then suddenly came up with the restore message. It hadn’t received a jolt or anything. It was truly a gutting moment, I can tell you …..

This was the second pass of the card (reformatted) – worked fine once. The other one with the glitch, this was it’s first outing.

Hi there Don and thanks Rafael and Craig.

I think that Don (and Phil) are absolutely right – it all seems a bit risky for my liking. Weighing up the cost of worry alone (especially after 2 recent glitches), it’s time to quit on these cards.

Have done the deed and got 2 Sony SxS 16Gb cards today.

Hmmm – what to do with 6 Sandisk 16Gb cards now …….!!

    Martin.

I’ve used 5 of my 6 Sandisk 16Gb Ultra II cards – they are all class 4. Don’t seem to have any problems recording to them. I’ve had one clip that has gone weird (as discussed on another thread).

I am in the UK so whether this makes a diference, I don’t know.

    Thanks – Martin.

    Hi Derek and Craig,

Yes, exactly the same, my clip (it was on an MxM card with 16Gb Sandisk Class 4) plays on Clip Browser but when I try to do an import of the MPEG4 it doesn’t let me do this.

I’ve uploaded the clip (its pretty short) – see what you can make of it:

Would be interested to see if you could get it to work!

    Martin.

Craig – this is most helpful and much appreciated.

I think for now, all I wanted to ensure was that I could record 720p 50 without any problems. This is great news for now – the 6 MxM cards + 16Gb Sandisk Ultras I’ve just received should serve well on location. Will need to look more into the overcranking though ….

    Thanks again,

    Martin.
