I just plop the camera files into EditReady (https://www.divergentmedia.com/editready) and it churns them out as ProRes files. Worth letting it do its stuff while you take a lunch break. Just import those straight into FCPX and it works a treat. You have the choice to resize etc. too if you need to. Think there is a free trial – found it to work very well.

This problem is now fixed (finally!) with the 10.9.2 update. It seems the 17 inch 2010 MBP was singled out!

Just as an update to this – the Mavericks 10.9.2 update has fixed this problem, one which seems to be confined to this particular model of MacBook Pro.

Hi Ron – I’m in the same boat as you – the slot on the 17inch MacBook pro isn’t working under Mavericks as yet. Anyway, I’ve got an extra partition on my MBP with Mountain Lion (which works fine with SxS cards in the slot) and boot into that when I need to off-load the cards. Once it’s all done, just reboot into Mavericks and it’s all there. Hope this helps. Martin.

Thanks everyone – Ok, so I might be tempted to stay another year – it has been pretty reliable so far and perhaps use Google drive as a fallback solution for now. I also like the way it (HT) gives you the connection speed whilst it uploads, which I can’t find on the others. Thanks again.

Julian – don’t know whether it helps, but I’ve got the same Mac Pro as you (2009 Quad Core). Over the summer I put in a Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7950 – £320 very well spent as FCPX really flies now. Unrendered timelines with 2 or 3 layers play perfectly (at 1080p 25), and the rendering is very fast. I was struggling before with an older card, with beach-balling and crashes, but the difference now is like chalk and cheese. The whole program just feels alive now. Just wondered whether that could be your bottleneck?
