Thanks for responses – yes, the JVC monitor is SD rather than HD. Just as an experiment I swapped to ‘Software HD to SD Letterbox 16:9’ on the HDTV up/downconverter and it definitely looks a bit sharper.

One thing that might have affected this maybe the fact that I originally imported the P2 files to the standard Apple 1080i50 Easy Setup. Then I got the Decklink Card and have been using the BM setup, so could there could be a slight issue there?

    Thanks, Martin.

    Hi David,

Thanks – I have just ordered the BM HD Pro card, so I am glad that you think the investment is worth it. The FirmTek 4 bay enclosure only arrived here in UK yesterday (less than 2 days after ordering it from USA!)so haven’t really had a chance to play with it, but bought it on the strength of recommendations on these boards. How do you find it with HD footage?

Thanks Noah – just located it under Text tab / Layout / Justification.

  • Well, guess what happened? I went all the way down there – rather strange meeting, didn’t hear anything for 4 weeks – only when I emailed did a response come back saying they were using a local company. Sent an invoice for expenses, which they have refused to pay. Might send a letter along the lines of very disappointed etc. etc., but best action is probably to forget about it!

Have come to expect the odd knock like this from time to time, but still leaves you feeling annoyed and taken advantage of.

    Well, we learn by expeience!!

    Regards, Martin.

  • Thanks guys – really appreciated – can get on now!

I noticed this some time back. Does it on the DV codec too so I don’t think the Decklink / Kona cards make any difference.

Going back to the original question – definitely get a DSR-11 deck. With cheap camcorders you can get tape mechanisms which periodically and randomly chew up tapes. Especially rewinding and forward winding – a whole tape can be rendered useless by one rewind. Just not worth the risk chewing up a day’s shooting because you used a cheap workaround. The day this happens (tight schedule with big new client) you will be kicking yourself!

Just my thoughts ……. (and a bad experience!)

    One of FCP’s little anomolies!

In FCP go to View / External Video / then select All Frames

    Should sort it out

You may have got this sorted, but for anyone else who has this problem I have found a remedy. Go to Sequence, Render All, and put a tick by “FULL”. This allows for a full render of everything. For some reason FCP5 defaults to this not being selected. Hope this helps!
