  • First HD Project – Just checking what I need

I have got my first HD project starting soon. The client is supplying me P2 files on disk. I am in the process of upgrading my system (G5 Dual 2Ghz 3.5GbRAM)as I have been doing DVCAM stuff up until now. Here is the shopping list:

Firmtek 4 drive enclosure + SATA card (got this already)
4 Hitachi 500Gb drives to make RAID
Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 PCI-X (hopefully future proofing)

Presumably the Easy Setup for this (I’m in UK, PAL land) is DVCPRO HD – 1080i50

Should all this work ok (outputting to Digi Beta finally)and can I monitor via Component into my Monitor? Also can I monitor sound via my Edirol MA-10D speakers?

Is the BM card overkill for what I’m doing?

    Thanks in advance!

    Martin.

    Martin,

You have a very nice and adequate kit there, essentially the same things I have here, except the speakers which I don’t know. If you’re going continue working in this biz the Blackmagic card you’ve chosen probably isn’t overkill — you could have spend a little less by not going for the Pro version of the BM card with 4:4:4 color space, but that one will probably seem like a wise investment at some point down the line when you really need it.

BTW, how do you like your Firmtek 4-bay enclosure? I feel mine was a great investment.

    Hi David,

Thanks – I have just ordered the BM HD Pro card, so I am glad that you think the investment is worth it. The FirmTek 4 bay enclosure only arrived here in UK yesterday (less than 2 days after ordering it from USA!)so haven’t really had a chance to play with it, but bought it on the strength of recommendations on these boards. How do you find it with HD footage?

    Martin.

    Martin,

The Firmtek 4-bay enclosure is great for anything and everything up to and including DVCPro100. I think you could get away with very light editing of uncompressed HD, but you would probably need more space and more speed (ie more striped drives) if you were going to be editing anything other than the simplest uncompressed HD projects.
