No need to wait Jason, if the overwrite behaviour annoys you that much, you could use a macro program like iKey (http://www.scriptsoftware.com) to do an F10 followed by Q from a single key.

On speed changes, yes it would be good to have a “lock duration in sequence” option on the speed window but until that happens, there is a way to solve the problem, scroll down and watch Ep 1:

AFAIK the situation doesn’t arise because Avid can’t do freezes on a sequence frame, only from a source clip.

This seems to be a common complaint from ex-Avid editors but I’ve never missed it myself or understood why it’s so crucial. If the freeze frame in the sequence has moving footage on either side (it usually does), then just I’d match frame to that.

I wonder whether people are making freeze frames from the sequence rather than matchframing to the source clip first and then making the freeze frame (so at least the clip name and source TC are in the new clip name).

If you’re shooting in 16:9, then the lines are likely to be the widescreen signalling flag as recorded on the tape. These lines tell TVs that the signal is 16:9 and aren’t present for 4:3 footage.

AFAIK it’s not possible to crop the lines off on the FCP side during capturing but it’s worth looking into the DSR menus to see if you can disable the WSS flag on the output. Other than that, your best bet is probably blanking them out in Compressor.

The Virtix plug-ins are After Effects format and your old non-Universal versions won’t work on Intel. It’s not something you can convert yourself, it’s up to Virtix to update the plug-ins to Universal Binary versions. Their site hasn’t been updated for 3 years or so, I wouldn’t hold out much hope but it’s worth dropping them an email.

Sadly not but you can jog through the sequence with the mouse wheel over the timeline ruler.

  • Too Much Too Soon have a plug-in called Smart Anamorphic which I think will do what you want:

  • I’m not sure that will give you what you want though – the aspect ratio will be wrong and left/right sides won’t be cropped.

As you say, an Aspect Ratio value of -33.33 and scale of 133.33% won’t get the scanlines to line up exactly and there will be a slight softening of the image. BTW the scale of 133.33% is deceiving – in reality it doesn’t mean that the image is zoomed in by a third because the scale and distort values work together to produce the final effect. Also, the field order of a clip will always be correct, regardless of the position of the clip. What does happen is the image loses sharpness if it is moved vertically by an odd number of pixels.

So if you need to be “super picky” about image quality, then the best way to do it is set the Aspect Ratio and Scale to “0” and change all the “-360/360” values in the Distort section to “-480/480”. That guarantees you’re only doing a horizontal scale with no change to the vertical.

Hmmm I dunno. Have to agree with Graeme, I’m not convinced that AJA has any more secret sauce than BMD does in this area. Appears to be just hardware scaling from FCP timeline to the HD-SDI output.

Interesting. So perhaps there is still a point in putting my old Cinewave card on eBay then?!
