You could render out a still frame psd, then in PS crop all out except needed hair, desaturate and adjust till happy, then save. This will preserve any detail that you may need. In AE fade the opacity of the stll when you need it. You will have to roto the postion if there is movement. Also try different transfer modes till you find one that works.
Hey just my two cents, no refunds:)

Search “secret preferences”: hold shift (pc) before selecting memory-cache preferences, in pull down menu click on secret and set purge every 15 frames during make movie. This will clear the rendered frames and hopefully stop your memory errors.

December 14, 2007 at 2:58 pm in reply to: What’s the best way to work with a large 3D scene?Check out Andrew Kramers Earth Zoom tutorial, it has some easy tips for using multiple images at large resolution that may be applied to your project. By using scale and masks you could easily stitch the different res images.

You could ask Andrew directly, or look at the trailer a little closer. Look at the polygons during the camera move. When the camera turns you can see the edges of the polygons. This means that they are shapes drawn with the shape tool in CS3 either in a precomp of their own or in the same comp as the text with very little opacity. If you do not have CS3 yet you can import an AI, PSD or PNG file with the same shape or one of your choosing. Just make sure the background is transparent and the layers 3D switch is on, then duplicate and animate the shapes as you like.
Hope this helps

Here is a PS tutorial on making a transparent logo. It may point you in the right direction. Then import to AE.

November 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm in reply to: HELP!!! Error:Unable to allocate space for image buffer… What?I had the same problem, check out Aharon’s tutorial on AE’s
secret preferences. So far it has worked great. -
By default After Effects will only use 2 gig of ram even if you have 4 gig using windows 32 bit. There is a little fix so it will use 3 gig of ram. After you back up your boot.ini file, modify the last line to read “/fastdetect/3GB”. If done correctly you will see “3 gig of ram” when you start AE in stead of 2 gig.

October 15, 2007 at 7:23 pm in reply to: how can I make burning letters that overflow the edges?Follow the tutorial it’s simple to do. I was interested in this effect as well so I created an example. I have the text on their own layers and changed the blending mode to overlay with 100% opacity. In the tutorial you create the splines freehand, but I traced the outline of the text and shape on a single solid to make the text more readable
