how can I make burning letters that overflow the edges?
I would like to have some letters burning on a doorway, but although it would be easy with a track matte or masks, I want the burning to overflow the mask for the letters (like flames licking the outside edge). With a mask and fractal noise for the flame, it will be underneath and constrained by the mask edge – how do I make it so that it also overflows the edges of the mask?

and a Displacement Map.

Great, thanks for that. How do I do it with regular text though? Do I have to change text to a mask? I am not sure how to do that…

Follow the tutorial it’s simple to do. I was interested in this effect as well so I created an example. I have the text on their own layers and changed the blending mode to overlay with 100% opacity. In the tutorial you create the splines freehand, but I traced the outline of the text and shape on a single solid to make the text more readable
