With a weird or intermittent system problem, you can try trashing the Final Cut Pro prefs:
    Quit Final Cut
In ~/Library/Preferences (the ~ is your username), delete com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
In ~Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/, delete:
    Final Cut Pro 5 Prefs
    Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
    Final Cut Pro Prof Cache

    To reinstall Final Cut Pro:
    Open the Applications folder.
Drag the Final Cut Pro application to the Trash.
    Go to /Library/Receipts.
In the Receipts folder, select the

June 7, 2006 at 6:47 pm in reply to: Opinion question, MacbookPro vs. G5?

I’m a big fan of the G5 desktops for speed and expansion options. You are easily able to buy cards for firewire, eSATA, and fibre channel storage. The MacBook Pro only has a single firewire bus and the new 34mm “proprietary” pci-e expansion slot. We are only just starting to see expansion options custom made for this slot. If you absolutely need portability ok, but if not go with the G5.

    Here are a couple we’ve found…..

May 26, 2006 at 6:47 pm in reply to: mp4 on the web

    Hey PJ hope this helps…

With the new QT formats for mp4 and h264 the filetypes need to be setup on your webserver.

Contact your webserver admin and ask them to change the mime types for extensions .mp4 and .m4v so that they call the quicktime plugin instead of having the browser display them as text.

If this is not an option for you, then use the MacOS File -> Create Archive command to .zip the file and upload it then. This workaround will allow your viewer to download the file then unzip it on their desktop for playback.

    Good luck!

Also check out Cinematize. I’ve used it dozens of times, great program for backing up your DVDs.

Since your client is using a Windows laptop, I would recommend encoding to a HD resolution Windows Media file. It has been my general observation that files encoded in WM9 play back quite beautifully on PC hardware.

The best Windows Media encoder for Mac currently is Telestream’s Flip4Mac

I would suggest scaling your file to the output resolution of the projector being used for best playback performance.

My test system: at home I have a PC running a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, Nvidia 6600, and 1 GB RAM connected to a Apple Cinema Display at 1920×1200.
