when the macbook pro came out, i remember a lot of posting going on comparing it to the g5.
my question is more of a dilema, as I am ready to upgrade from my g4 powerbook (3 years old) to a new machine for editing, and am not sure which is a better option. I do a lot of mobile editing, so the mbc seems like a good idea, but not sure if its maybe not a better idea to get a g5 tower and continue to mobile edit on my powerbook when its necessary and hammer on the g5 at home.
any helpful hints before i go drop 5 gs??
also, as an editor, do most of you guys bill for render time?
    thanks

Which G4 Powerbook do you have? And does it still work for what you are editing, or do you need more.

If you edit more out of the office, get the MBP.

And yes, I charge for render time. If it is a long render that I just let go, maybe just a little machine time.

I have a g4 1ghz power pc with 1mb L3 cache and 512 mb sdram. Its pretty slow compared to the G5 I worked on the other day. I am just curious as to how well the MCP computers are working for editing, as I know the G5 blazes… Thanks for the info on the render issue, as I sit here and wait for the machine to render!!
    thanks

I’m a big fan of the G5 desktops for speed and expansion options. You are easily able to buy cards for firewire, eSATA, and fibre channel storage. The MacBook Pro only has a single firewire bus and the new 34mm “proprietary” pci-e expansion slot. We are only just starting to see expansion options custom made for this slot. If you absolutely need portability ok, but if not go with the G5.

    Here are a couple we’ve found…..
