Sure you can use Animation – just send to Compressor and use any codec at all.

Add a Loop End marker to fix the duration.
Delete any FCPX effects you create in Motion (titles, transition, effects, generators) by going to user/movies/motion templates and delete the appropriate folders.

That’s odd, they work fine for me. Are you absolutely sure your video is long enough? Sometimes the drop zone in the generator isn’t revealed for the first several seconds, but the video plays from the very start, and runs out. Otherwise, not sure what to tell you.
