Dynamic Guides and Snapping not working in Canvas
Posted by David Intrator on July 17, 2011 at 1:28 pmI have both dynamic guides and snapping enabled in Motion 5.
Yet, in the canvas, the dynamic guides do not appear and nothing snaps.
Any ideas? Anyone else experience this?
Thanks.

July 17, 2011 at 3:39 pmMaybe you have your overlays turned off? Command-/ or under the View menu

July 17, 2011 at 4:24 pmThanks, Mark. But overlays are turned on.
I experimented with a new project and there dynamic guides and
snapping seem to work.I’m perplexed however. What could cause this problem with the original project?
I was just creating a simple project with text to try out Motion 5.So far, it looks a little buggy. Hope the problem is with me and not the app.
(However, with the recent FCPX debacle, I’ve completely lost faith in Apple)

July 31, 2011 at 3:01 pmHello Mark,
I’m still encountering this strange bug (on least on my system) regarding Motion 5.
As I mentioned earlier, within a project suddenly dynamic guides will disappear. I thought trashing the preferences regularly had solved the problem.
However, it has begun to occur again.. All guides are enabled. All overlays are enabled.
But, like I said, the dynamic guides suddenly disappear, as does snapping in the canvas.
To make matters even more weird, if I open a new project, everything is fine.
I can only assume that I’m missing something or some kind of corruption occurs on my system when working on project in Motion 5.
All advice is sincerely appreciated.
Thanks.

July 31, 2011 at 4:40 pmSorry don’t know what else to suggest – perhaps copy/paste all your groups into a new project.

August 22, 2011 at 10:23 pmHey David,
I found that the ruler has to be on for the guides to appear. However, my guides have disappeared as well and i can seem to get them back. I’m stumped (and not a little annoyed) -

July 14, 2014 at 8:56 amI had this same problem recently. I confirmed that Overlays and Dynamic Guides were turned on. I also had the snapping button on – but still, the dynamic guides would not appear.
I eventually tried something random that ended up working and fixing the problem: Delete your Preferences for Motion 5.
For Motion 5.1.2 (or later versions):
Quit Motion.
Hold the Command and Option keys while opening Motion.
A window appears asking you to Continue opening Motion or Delete Preferences.
Click Delete Preferences. This command removes the preference files and resets Motion to default settings. After I did that, the Dynamic Guides returned and everything worked fine.
I hope this helps.
