What you’ll need to do is put each of those items in a group, and use the group’s position values to adjust each of the snapshots.

A particle emitter is ideal for this, you just need to tweak it to get the result you want.

You answered your own question. Your sequence codec is terrible for images. You might try a flavor of ProRes instead. Also, in your Sequence Setting (Command-0), try setting the render quality for Motion projects to best.

April 3, 2012 at 2:44 pm in reply to: Reverse behavior in 3D

You can try cloning the full animation (put it all in a group and clone the group) and then retiming the clone to reverse it – however, with a 3D animation, sometimes the clone won’t look correct due to flattening. Your other option is to export the full animation as rendered movie, bring it back in, and reverse it.

Set the group to Fixed Resolution in the Group Inspector. By default, the group size changes depending on the position and size of the layers they contain. Fixed Resolution forces a group stay a specific size (by default, the size of your project, which is usually what you want).

Nicely done, Simon! The Simple Border effect “knows” the length of the text string because it always adjusts to the bounding box size of the layer – neat trick!

I’d love to check that out, Simon, but the link is dead. Can you make a new one?

You aren’t going to be able to do this, I’m afraid. There is no exposed parameter in Motion that stores a text length. If you move the anchor to the right, then the text will be align right and the anchor won’t move as the text length changes. What you CAN do, however, is rig a control to allow someone in Motion OR FCP X to manually adjust your mask to the text length by dragging a slider – or moving an on-screen control.

March 28, 2012 at 4:19 pm in reply to: stuck with keyframes in Motion 5

Make the value of the ending keyframe of your first animation match the value of the starting keyframe for your second animation, then set the interpolation for the curve between the keyframes to Constant (or Linear should work as well) by right-clicking the curve in the Keyframe editor.

March 27, 2012 at 5:36 pm in reply to: Motion 5 solid background not transferring to FCPX

Chris, your problem is exactly as I described. You placed your background image into the Title Background layer, which is the placeholder dropzone that gets replaced with the video in FCP X. This is why you don’t see your image.

You need to clear the drop zone, then add your image as it’s own separate layer.
