Motion 5 is fully color-managed and works in a different color space than Motion 4 (it’s more “accurate”) – so you’ll likely not be able to match exports exactly between the two. You can try adding a Gamma filter to the affected layers and adjust it to 1.8 or 2.2 to see if that helps.

Did you put your background image into the placeholder (the drop zone)? That placeholder represents the video in FCP X, and will be replaced by your video, no matter what content you put in it in Motion. If you want something to remain in the project, it needs to be it’s own layer above the placeholder drop zone.

1) What is the font? It could be corrupted, try changing the font.
2) Try trashing your prefs
1) Quit Motion.
2) Navigate to User/Library/Preferences.
3) Locate com.apple.motion.plist and delete it (for Motion 3 or 4)—

1) Use the advanced keying controls to see if you can bring it back. If you aren’t familiar with them, I cover them in-depth as part of this tutorial:

2) If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to create an animated matte on a copy of the clip (roto).

That’s exactly how keyframes are supposed to work. You set different values at two different points in time, and Motion interpolates between them to create animation. If you want an instantaneous jump in value from one frame to the next, you could set the two keyframes a frame apart from each other, or as has been suggested, simply change the interpolation to Constant. All this is explained well in the Motion help doc, and works the same as keyframing in other applications.

Just set keyframes to make it do what you want. Change the interpolation as needed.
