The Motion project file embedded in FCP will revert if you delete the cache file. To get around this, export a movie out of motion matching your FCP sequence settings (so the movie won’t need to be rendered again in FCP).
In Motion 3, Optical Flow analyzes the entire underlying media, regardless of the duration of your clip in the timeline – to get around this, from FCP, export, import, and replace the clip in your timeline before sending to Motion.
In Motion 4, OF only analyzes between In and Out points, making for much smaller files.
In 3 or 4, you should be able to put that cache file wherever you want in Motion > Preferences.

You can’t import separate layers of an Illustrator file (saved as .ai or .pdf). You can only do that with Photoshop (.psd) files.
You’ll have to export each layer out of Illustrator separately to have them separate in Motion.

As long as you don’t have depth of field enabled, everything is in focus all the time.
If you get very close to an image, it will still be in focus, but it will begin to pixelate because you are essentially scaling it over 100%, perhaps that is what you are seeing. In that case, you need to start with an image of higher resolution.

Ah, yes, you are right about seeing the image beyond the mask.
Not sure if it’s a bug but certainly try trashing your prefs:
1) Quit Motion.
2) Navigate to User/Library/Preferences.
3) Locate com.apple.motion.plist and delete it.Also if you post the project file I’ll see what it does here…

You can still do what you want with one mask and I think it will solve your issue. Mask the polaroid image to cut a hole in it. place the caterpillar beneath it – you can scale and position the caterpillar independently of the mask. Now with both the polaroid and the caterpillar in the same group, you can transform the group and everything in it will transform together.

Not sure why you are adding a rectangle mask and an image mask – all you should need is the rectangle mask, applied to the caterpillar clip.

That’s the general idea – duplicating layers, applying filters, using generators or library content as the source for image masks, and then using blend modes to composite layers together…

You aren’t doing anything wrong – that’s just the way it works. It’s been better addressed in the Motion 4 book.
