  • No layers when import .ai file into Motion

    Hi,

I’m trying to import an ai (CS3) file into Apple Motion 3 but I’m not getting the layers. I went to File -> Import and I got a PDF image. I then tried dragging the ai file into the motion canvas, held it for 5 seconds without letting go of mouse and let go, and I still didn’t see any layer options.

    What’s going on?

    Thanks
    Laura

You can’t import separate layers of an Illustrator file (saved as .ai or .pdf). You can only do that with Photoshop (.psd) files.

You’ll have to export each layer out of Illustrator separately to have them separate in Motion.

There IS a third party plugin that parses Illustrator layers. I have no need for it so I’ve not bothered to memorize what it’s called. Anyone know if there is a master registry/list of Motion plugs?

It’s called LayerLink from Ampede but it’s been defunct (unavailable) for a few years now. Any plugin built on the FxPlug architecture will work with Motion. I try to keep a complete list here:
