I fundamentally agree with the idea that having a well organized project is not the same as editing, but organizing is a task that need to be done in proportion to the scale of the task at and . If the project is a small scale thing, the required organizing might be really light but for a large scale project I can see, especially with X , that some extensive tagging and key wording will pay benefits over the life of a project . I think I need to take the latter route with the big project I have in front of me .

How and ow much one uses metadata probably depends on how complex the edit project is. Cutting a some simple interviews could result in very little metadata use. Tag some favorites, and ranges of answers and maybe you are done. I did see a video by an editor that had a half dozen interviews where all people interviewed were asked the same questions. He screened and tagged extensively and then did a search based on some terms he determined and dropped the clips returned by the search into a project and basically had a rough cut.
I am working on a project with material shot over the course of 25 years and quite a bit of complexity, from a character, subject and action point of view and am puzzling over just how to organize the metadata tags, keywords, etc. I think I need some keywording and tagging system that will be more complex to organize my material and I haven’t figured that out just yet.
I do foresee using metadata extensively in the organization of this project. -
Not recognizing spanned clips would seem a bit odd, since so many cameras other than the c300 have file size limits and span clips . What is the solution to this issue.

I have Verizon FIOS in my office– 75 up and down. backing up to the cloud even with that takes quite a long time. If you are shooting a low mid codec Like Canon XF with a C300, 82 minutes of footage weighs 32 GB. 82 minutes is not a lot to shoot in a day, I frequently shoot 4 or 5 x that on Doc Projects or agency work where we might be shooting multi- cam. Even with my FIOS connection, having a current back up on the cloud would be immensely time consuming.

Having just been in Australia for about a week and spoken with a number of tech people i can testify that the internet bandwidth in Australia sucks. I was staying at a Sofitel in the central business district of Sydney and the hotel wifi system would kick me off the system after every 1 GB of data usage.. So , if I left my laptop in the hotel room and some one someplace in the world added files to a shared dropbox folder , i would get kicked off the system. This happened a lot, multiple times per day, depending on drop box activity and my local usage.
My advice; carry enough drives, skip the frustration of banging your head against the wall trying to back up to the cloud from Australia, maybe even fedex some drives home just so you are not carrying all your media in one basket. -
I use a black magic ultra studio so not the cheapest interface solution. THe hard part is the VHS deck. There are tons of them for sale on EBAY dirt cheap but the problem is most are junk. I too have a project that involves lots of legacy VHS that I had to digitize and finding a VHS with solid playback was a bit of a project in and of itself. Once I had the deck it was a matter of feeding tapes and capturing pro res lt files.

I did use for a while an apple trackpad with “the touch ” software. The software itself is no longer supported by arctic whiteness as sales plummeted at a certain point. TO be fair the software was a bit erratic in its behavior for me and I can see why users might ditch it, but there were some functions like skimming , making ins and out and a few other things that worked really well and I sort of miss that the app won’t be developed further. I really liked using the track pad with defined gestures and I hope some one else will develop something similar or even better than this app in the future.

Regarding the artifacts. I recently had a shoot where 2 cards that had been transferred to back up drives had very similar looking artifacts which resulted in doing a reshoot of 3 key interviews. Painful but possible. The shoot was for a very high profile corporate client and there was quite a bit of sturm und drang but we got the reshoots done and moved on.
The root cause was a bad card reader ( Hoodman Steel) that we used to offload the first card of the day. Other cards on the shoot were offloaded with a different card reader as random happenstance. I’ve NEVER had a bad recording with either my C300 or 500, but this time the card reader F’ed the data. I mentioned this to the people who make shot put pro, (I’m a beta tester) and they are cooking something up that would go beyond checksum and actually compare offloaded files against original files..The artifacts I see in the frame grab look exactly like the artifacts that I was hit with.
I’m on Yosemite and using a older canon plugin in and have no issues importing C300 footage into FCPX, so I wouldn’t sweat the xf plug in too much. Use the one for mavericks, it works.

This is a tricky question, no? you are cutting picture and expecting a music cut to be in the right place hen you make the picture cut?
