We’re kind of partial to “Ultimatte”. Been using it for hundreds of “green screen” interviews. Had good results in FCP 4.5 then when 5.0 came along, it got broken! Good news is that the same plug in works with After Effects. So, we altered our workflow to do the green screens in AE. They’re absolutely perfect.
Another high end option would be SHAKE, which offers distributed rendering.

You’ve been watching too many “crime scene” movies where the FBI guy just “dials away” the extraneous noise leaving pristine, clear, audible dialogue of the Senator accepting a bribe. Truth is, in real life it ain’t that easy. (the audio… not the bribe!)
Sure, there are many tools you can use to “clean up” your audio tracks, but they all extract a price. Your original dialogue may be altered to the point that leaving in the background is a better option. Sound track Pro has a very capable “noise print” identifier/remover. But go easy on it. Filtering out this kind of noise really trashes the remaining audio. Good luck.

The brand new release of FCP adresses some of these issues. If you plan on relying upon Media Manager, you would want to upgrade now.

If you need to “see where the machine is” during capture, you can set your digibeta deck to generate a TC window and “Status” in its output. Also, can’t you move the “capture window” so that the picture doesn’t cover your numbers? Don’t quite understand what your asking for.

As long as there is still SD production, a digibeta deck will have value. Whether you can justify the expense is only a question you can answer. However, be aware that as soon as HD takes over the bulk of production out there, a digi deck will be about as valuable as a 3/4″ Umatic (remember those?) The question then becomes, can you recover your investment before it’s obsolete. Yes? Buy it. No? Not unless you need a boat anchor.

Couple things that can cause this. “Dupe detection” on ANY timeline in a project that you have open will bring your CPU to it’s knees. Check every project and turn it OFF.
You may also want to turn of other processor intensive activities like waveforms and thumbnails and so forth. If doing these steps has no effect, then I would start pointing at your drives.

We print our own labels for the larger sizes (XDCAm, betas, digi, etc.) but, when it comes to the mini dv’s….. I just cross my fingers and hope that you can read the handwriting. We have a big problem with people NOT labeling the tape and only labeling the box. Can’t say I blame them, ’cause you need a microscope to see what kyou’re doing.
