    Hi there Jeremy,

Yeah, its a difficult one, some projects may begin at work and I will finish them off at home… but then i guess a usb drive could be the only transportable item… but then again, I spend two hours on the train per day, so would love to be able to use that time. Perhaps that can be a second computer, replace my PC laptop at xmas!

    Thanks
    Mark.

aaah mr weiss, always looking for the perks hey?
looks like I may be joining the fcp bandwagon – a merger with a sister company who already have several fcp’s… more of that on the edit*ors forum… later mate,

[rene hazekamp] “final cut 4 didn’t have subpixel rendering, newer versions have it”

    hello rene
    thanks for the response.
    are you sure about that?

i have not seen any documentation saying fcp5 or 6 use sub pixel rendering and someone i know who alsu uses PP says this is the only reason he is not working with fcp.

if you know of any place i can read that coming from apple, i would love to see it.

    thanks,
    mark.

[Shane Ross] “It is you that aren’t ready…not FCP Studio 2. Only in terms of being familiar with the product.”

    Hello Shane,

I am a PP user and have been considering moving to FCP for stability reasons. Hearing that FCP wipes timeline effects when clips are sent to Motion turns me off, i must say. I would definitely regard that as a serious flaw… there is no reason why it should have that limitation and I’m sure it will improve in future.

My main concern, and perhaps you guys know the answer… I heard FCP does not have sub-pixel rendering natively within FCP itself. Surely not? If you scale down a layer and do a gradual move from L-R, is motion sub pixel or will it have the 90’s look about it? This ia of massive concern since a lot of compositing I do is done direclty in PP and if FCP is behind in this regard, its not worth considering for me.

    Thanks,
    Mark.

    Thanks guys,
If you have any tips on what I can do to standardise the edl, that would be great. Otherwise I guess I will print the edl and recreate it manually, only about 50 edits anyway!

[Larry Sherwood] “use horizontal span mode for VGA”

I found it eventually, larry, it is very well hidden. That Catalyst control panel is designed for teenagers… far prefered the matrox digidesktop pref settings.

BTW, if anyone else has an ATI, you have to RH mouse click on the LH monitor icon in the catalyst programme, and choose something which says span digital space or something weird… that sorts it.

    Thanks

[Larry Sherwood] “use horizontal span mode for VGA”

    Hey Larry, howzit mate?
I’m not at my ATI x1800xt right now, but I dont remember ever seeing the word “span” on their catalyst software. One thing I can tell you, is that if I FULL-SCREEN PP2, it shrinks down to take up the full LH monitor… so to have dual screen PP2, I have to un-Full-Screen PP2 and manually drag the window to dual screen size. Could that be an indication that this (mysterious) “span” is not enabled?
    Thanks,
    Mark

[mark palmos] “the Programme Monitor does not refresh if you scrub to another timeline clip”

Very weird discovery – the display works perfectly if the Programme Monitor is on the LH Screen, but playback does not happen properly if the PM is on the RH screen.

I am wondering if this has to do with ATI display adapter rather. (this is the display adapter which Matrox recommend as their #1 display adapter (ATI x1800XT)

    WEIRD!!!

[Harm Millaard] “and use 8 Hitachi SATA300 disks in a Raid 5”

    Hello Harm

So are most you guys using this many drives building an external case with 8 individual SATA cables sticking out of a hole in the back of the PC? Surely 8 internals is asking for heating problems?

    Thanks again,

    Mark.
