    Yesterday I was finally able to install FCS 2 and start testing things out. I’m happy to say that today I was able to capture 1080 24p all day long from HDCAM tapes to ProRes 422 HQ on our Quad G5. We have a Kona 3 with the latest drivers capturing to a Huge U320RX which was 85% full when we started. Everything went pretty smoothly, no big hiccups or issues. I’ll continue to test for the next few days and let you know if anything pops up, but for now I think I can safely say that you CAN capture ProRes on the EOL G5’s.

    Hey Terry,

    I’m continuing with more tests today. 1080 25 works fine, 1080 30 does not. I tried multiple times and it started dropping frames just after a few seconds. This is no problem for me, being that I mostly work with 23.976 and a little 25. But for the majority of the US market who works in 29.97, then it seems as though you’re out of luck with a Quad G5. I’d be curious to here if anyone does get it working, but my guess is that you simply need more processing power to crunch the codec. I’ll continue testing away and report back if I come across any interesting info.

    I’m glad that we’re starting to see more and more old school L’rs on the cow. With FCS 2, I think we’re going to see a lot more of them popping up here.

    Before ProRes, I think that DNxHD was really the last major thing that Adrenaline had over FCP. But, now that we have ProRes and I see that it’s working, I think we may finally lay our Adrenaline to rest.

    The major thing that Avid still has over FCP is media management. Because of the architecture of FCP, I don’t think that will ever change. That hasn’t kept Avid from killing themselves though.

    As you know, I’ve owned Kona products for years. I’ve jut been an occasional lurker in the past. As we are now nearly 50 percent FCP vs. Avid, you will be seeing more of me here. :-p

    Very true! You absolutely have to plan well and really keep your media organized with FCP. It’s nothing like Avid in this sense, you just have to be smart about it and stay one step ahead.

    I wonder if we will be able to capture 1080i/60 with the IO HD on a Quad G5. Maybe the PreRes chip in the IO HD can offset the lack of processing power.

    Hey there George!!! Remember me, a voice from the past???

    You should absolutely be able to capture ProRes 422 1080i/60 with your quad machine using the IO HD.

    In addition, simulataneous export of high quality cafe lattes may be possible.
