i would look at factors like huge still images (anything over 4000 pixels will crash fcp every time in my experience) and also I am assuming you have the latest updates? I had a lot of crashing with the release version and motion templates, but now fcp is very solid except for the large stills issue.
do you only have these dv files?

amazing, that works fantastically. There is no RH mouse contextural menu for send to compressor, and I have never tried this, great, and goodbye to batch export via fcp!

One thing I really miss using Compressor is FCP’s ability to batch render sequences.

We had about 108 sequences to render to flash last week and it was a breeze batch rendering the sequences directly from FCP. Compressor, i think, can only be given one FCP sequence at a time, very limiting in that regard.

Jeff, I had a similar problem yesterday, but instead of FCP telling me it was rendering, it told me the codec of the timeline was incompatible with the codec I was editing to tape with… which was bizarre since it was the same.

What made it work was to create a new nested timeline which contained the sequence i wanted to edit to tape initially, and then once that is done, select ALL in the nested timeline (should be one very long clip) and drag and drop that to the little ASSEMBLE icon in the edit to tape window.

That worked for me and I think illuminates a bug in FCP (unless there is something i am not following)
It works to drag and drop the sequence contents, but does not to simply press the ASSEMBLE button. They (in my mind) should be exacty the same thing, but they behave differently.

but i must say something about the service for doing the upgrade. It takes a lot for me to be impressed, and i was.

sony sent ups around with a large box with two cardboard frames inside it, each containing a single sheet of plastic stretched over the frame. The camera was plopped on the one sheet, the other clamped it down and the box closed – with the camera suspended in mid air by two sheets of plastic. I loved that – so much more environmentally friendly.

they picked it up on a monday, and delivered it back the next monday (albeit in a box which was less clever and frugal.

When i spoke to sony about the firmware upgrade they said, do you wnat us to also fix the battery drain when the camera is off? OMG YESSSS… I had forgotten about that one. And, she asked, does the paint come off the buttons at the back of the camera, scratch it with your nail and see. It didnt, but she said they will check it anyway.

Odd they charge in the usa since you get a hell of a lot better and cheaper customer service there than in the uk (ive lived in both countries for 8 years)

So i was impressed by their speed and care, and am even more impressed by the idea of chaning tiny SD cards instead of buying the insanely pricey sxs cards.

Hi guys
I just got my ex1 back from the upgrade today, and tried my kinsgston reader and transcend 8gb class 6 sticks, and they work perfectly in all resolutions, but gives problems when i overcrank it, but i have not found the threashold exactly, seems to be between 40-50fps.

Transcend 8gb can be found on ebay for less than a set of oral-b replacement heads for my toothbrush… its absolutely amazing… except for the thing sticking out which does do my anal head a bit.

I wanted to update my firmware and see it is not available in the UK as a download from Sony… one is supposed to send the camera in? Hell, what a bizarrely cautious procedure. Anyone know where it can be downloaded to DIY?

I think this is the answer to the questions, in case anybody wants to know, and if someone knows an easier way, please let me know!

Q1/
1/ set FCP Audio Video settings Audio Playback to Duet (the crucial step)
2/ on maestro mixer, make sure To Hardware is set to Out L-R, Input 1 is full blast, and on
3/ maestro control, put volume output at -10 or so
4/ monitor headphones in duet
5/ to play back what you have captured over your speakers via the capture card you use, you have to set the audio playback settings in FCP AV settings back to what they were, for example, Aja Kona.

Q2
I dont think FCP can record VO without video, so if you are like me and dont like to record video for nothing, rather use the VO tool, stick a slug on a timeline and copy paste it a few dozen times to create a video track to do the VO to…

yeah, except the cable numbering system comprises a pair of rings with a number on it, and the rings are seamless, so i guess team B put the rings on the cable before attaching the BNC connector, so they will have to undo and redo it… at least soho in london is small – easy for them to pop in and fix it.
