  • FCP settings list to long – how to cut & how to save settings

Posted by Rory Hinds on October 29, 2008 at 12:24 am

    Hi there

I’m hoping someone can help me.
I’m running FCP6.0.4 and want to cut the list of Settings and can’t seem to find where they are stored.

In FCP doing…. File/Export/QuickTime Movie and choose the setting

When I export a timeline and choose a different setting for export the list is way too long with settings I don’t ever use.

I’ve looked in the /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Custom Settings
    and
/Applications/Final Cut Pro Additional Easy Setups

Moving files out of these folders doesn’t seem to shorten the list.

Another things I’m trying to work out is I’d like to save my own setting and recall it but when I choose

File/Export/QuickTime Movie and choose the Custom Setting there is no way of saving the setting for future recall.

Is this just something FCP is unable to do?

Use COMPRESSOR. You can FILE>EXPORT>via COMPRESSOR…and you can make a favorite there. And it is MUCH faster than FCP in converting. Especially if you set it up to use all of your processors.

You can’t. This is why I suggested Compressor. And it is just about as quick as FCP. WHY? Because you can send the job to compressor right from FCP, and then you have access to all of your preset settings. Straight QT Conversion from FCP won’t save custom settings. Sucks.

    Hi Shane

    Thanks for you’re help.

Adding compressor to the chain would slow me down as my spots are 30 seconds so output from FCP is much quicker.

Do you know if you can customize the list in FCP?

    Regards

Plus, if you export as a reference file, then you can continue to edit in FCP while compressor works in the background.

I can’t believe I never thought to do that. The lack of background rendering when exporting from FCP is a massive gripe I have with Compressor.

Anyway, in response to the original post I think if you go to Audio/Video Settings/Sequence Presets and duplicate one of the ones already there, you can edit it to be your own custom setting when you export. You can choose whatever compressor, frame size, interlacing etc you want. Not something I’ve done before but I think I will now that I’ve worked it out.
Looks like you can also delete ones you don’t want, but that’s not something I’m willing to test, just in case!

    Hi there Shane,

One thing I really miss using Compressor is FCP’s ability to batch render sequences.

We had about 108 sequences to render to flash last week and it was a breeze batch rendering the sequences directly from FCP. Compressor, i think, can only be given one FCP sequence at a time, very limiting in that regard.

    Till later
    Mark.

Compressor is designed precisely to DO batch rendering – it does a really good job of it too. In the browser window just select all the sequences you want to encode and go File/Export/Export Using Compressor (or right click). Then once in Compressor you need to select all of the sequences and then drag your desired settings over – applies it straight to every item.

    OMG
amazing, that works fantastically. There is no RH mouse contextural menu for send to compressor, and I have never tried this, great, and goodbye to batch export via fcp!

    Cheers

    Mark,

The problem with that method is that you can’t keep editing FCP while compressor does its thing. However, if you export reference movies and import them into Compressor you can.
