    Thank you, David…

That was the idea I was grasping but just a bit out of reach while I’m editing and responding to posts during the renders.

[Nick Meyers] “you could export your program and drop that into Something that has a normalisation tool the way what most people understand it.
SoundTrack Pro, would probably do the job.

This would be the best overall option.

By being imported, I mean that someone had captured the footage into a project, then moved to a new project and to keep from recapturing the footage, they just imported the footage from the first project. I have seen this before and it had the same issue you are seeing.

FCP by its nature handles media very differently than Avid.

But since you have the media on drives and you said that you were going to back these up, it should be just fine for editing. But now, if you had to make the footage offline and needed to recapture at a later date – you would enter into an editor’s nightmare. Changes at a later date could cause you to drink yourself into a stupor…

Keep all your footage safe and everything will be OK. Burning to BluRay would be a great backup option to consider.

The easiest way to do this is… edit your program as you would normally edit. Edit for proper sound mixing, then you can drop your sequence into a new sequence and normalize that one for broadcast. That way everything is normalized like you want.

Sounds like you have a multi-fold problem here… and its not necessarily a FCP issue. It’s more of a personnel issue and not capturing the media correctly.

Can you tell if your footage is actually captured or is it imported footage? Look in you Capture Scratch folder and see if you have files with the same names as in your bins. If so, the footage was most likely captured incorrectly. If you see different file names or not at all, then you footage was imported from another source or folder.

The “not yet” that you are seeing in your Capture column comes from footage that has been imported and not captured. This is very normal.

The issues you are having usually happen when dealing with a client that uses someone to capture footage elsewhere and you edit at a later time. Most of the time, a person who is in charge of capturing footage is most likely not an editor but a production assistant. This isn’t always the case, but sometimes and I can’t say this is the case for you.

But, if timecodes are going to be an issue for you, I’d suggest getting a copy of the tapes or talking with someone at the capture facility and asking them to look at the footage they sent you. Then, having some recapture the footage properly and send that to you to edit.

To add to what Jeremy spoke about… This is a real possibility.

Also, with DV camcorders (and HDV), timecode needs to be properly set in the camera’s menus for you to get accurate timecode.

Let me give you an example. When we purchased our Sony HVR-Z1U camcorders, the timecode was set to automatic. Not thinking anything of this several shows were taped. After getting the tapes in the edit suite, we found that FCP was giving us timecode errors when we captured the footage. Come to find out… the Z1U’s were recording timecode in NDF and DF at odd intervals. So… we went into the camera’s setup menus and set all of the Z1U’s to DF. Since that time, we’ve had no timecode errors.

Can you tell us what tape deck you are using and how it is hooked up to your computer?

May 19, 2008 at 2:19 pm in reply to: FCS2: Too many bugs together?

    Wow! This is very odd…

I can’t say that I have seen any of this behavior and I constantly swap between programs all of the time. At most any given time in the day, I’ll have Entourage, FCP, Motion, Safari, maybe Photoshop, Illustrator or After Effects, all open at the same time and I haven’t seen this at all.

It could be that you may need to clean out your prefs, or it could be hardware/memory related.
When we got our first Mac Pro system, ProMax installed some memory from Nanya (the same as what Apple used) and my system was doing things like this. After some time talking with ProMax, they decided to replace all of my memory with Kensington and the computer has been very stable since.

I’m not saying this is your problem, but its something to look into.

Something else that could be a consideration. FCP 6.02 was known to have some real bad bugs. After going to Leopard, we upgraded all of the software to its latest versions. Sure seems alot more stable. The only real bug with 6.03 is with LiveType but Apple left that out of FCS last year for a reason. Working with Motion isn’t that difficult. Now, working with older projects that have LiveType and the moving backgrounds may be a problem, but that can be worked around.

    Mac Pro OctoCore (2007 version)
    Leopard 10.5.2, Quicktime 7.4.5
    FCP 6.03 (Pro Apps Updated)
    8 gig of RAM
    ATI X1900XT
    AJA Kona 3 software 5.1
four internal drives (one 500 gig, three 750 gig)
On 750 gig external Maxtor backup drive (Time Machine)

    Wow! Good point!

I guess that was also a violation of copyright laws. Makes it hard to get the word out when every said is copy-written.

  • Ok… Ok…

    To your corners, guys…

The real lesson here is… Don’t install software from ANY drive manufacturer for a simple firewire or USB external drive. You don’t need it. Its built in to the OS. Simple.
