I work basically with FC, Color and Compressor.
The three of them are working fine but the three of them have big problems when talking about quitting the processes and save:
    – FC: I can NOT EXPORT USING QT CONVERSION. When I try so and hit “Save” i can not save. Neither “Cancel” works. No way to leave the “Export” window. Solution: FORCE QUIT FC.
    – COMPRESSOR: IMPOSSIBLE TO QUIT A JOB. Once you started a process Compressor will try to the death to finish the job. Even when exiting the process from the Activity Monitor, if you re-start your computer or relaunch Compressor the process will go on again. Nothing to do in the Batch Monitor. Solution: Erase everything in the “History” window.
    – COLORr: If you try SAVE the ball will spin for few minutes. In the Activity Monitor you will get a “Compressor not responding” and a “gzip” application taking 90% of my CPU. Then after few minutes A MYSTERIOUS “-C” file grows up in the root level of my main HD taking few GBs memory.
I haven’t read any other post about the issue exporting QT Conversion, but the problem with Color and Compressor are not only mine.
For years I’ve been preventing and avoiding problems to my computer. A basic maintenance routine (Maintenance, Repairing Permissions, DiskWarrior) had always helped me in this kind of low performance situation. But this time no. Don’t know what to do.

    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

[Rafael Amador] “- FC: I can NOT EXPORT USING QT CONVERSION. When I try so and hit “Save” i can not save. Neither “Cancel” works. No way to leave the “Export” window. Solution: FORCE QUIT FC.”

Works here no problem. We generally export using Flip4Mac WMV codec when we do this, but three machines and I can’t recall any of them exhibiting this behavior.

[Rafael Amador] “- COMPRESSOR: IMPOSSIBLE TO QUIT A JOB.”

Two of our machines do this, the other will quit normally after about two minutes. Compressor has definitely gotten more flaky under Leopard.

[Rafael Amador] “- COLORr: If you try SAVE the ball will spin for few minutes.”

Not seeing this at all on any of our systems. There was a discussion in the Color forum about AutoSave exhibiting something similar to this, but Color saves just fine everytime on our systems. Both in Leopard and Tiger.

I’ve definitely seen the QT export bug. If, while the save window is open, you switch to the finder or another app, then try to switch back to the save dialog, it’ll get hung. Can’t cancel or exit or save. Force quit is the only option. I frequently swap out to the finder to check my project or expot folder to see just what I named a previous export or maybe where I previously saved a export. When I cmd+tab back to the fcp save dialog, I can’t save or cancel/exit.

Maybe that’s why I haven’t seen it. We don’t touch our machines whenever they’re doing any sort of export or long render.

    Hi Walter,
I’ve been making some tests. I though that the problem in Color could be because the footage I was sending from FC was EX-1. But the footage is not the problem. The same it happens with 10b Unc or DV.
    Autosave and Quit, no problem.
Comm-S: 10 minutes beachbolling and an strange 5 GB file in my HD. If you try open the file, it’s duplicates. ??
The machine still working. But a mistake is a little headache.

Nope, don’t see that here, just tried it again and it saves just fine. Be sure you’re saving to your internal harddrive and not to an external.

[Rafael Amador] “If you try open the file, it’s duplicates. ??”

Nope, not seeing that here, I can open an old file just fine.

Yes Bret. You explained better than me the situation. This happens when FC is in standby. So is not an operation that could ever compromise nothing. And is an operation that you need to do some times even if there is an application rendering. Shouldn’t happens.

This happens when you activate Options. When you switch to another app and come back the wrong window is in the front. You have to move them around and cancel out of each one separately in the right order. This is the only time I’ve seen this happen.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Wow! This is very odd…

I can’t say that I have seen any of this behavior and I constantly swap between programs all of the time. At most any given time in the day, I’ll have Entourage, FCP, Motion, Safari, maybe Photoshop, Illustrator or After Effects, all open at the same time and I haven’t seen this at all.

It could be that you may need to clean out your prefs, or it could be hardware/memory related.
When we got our first Mac Pro system, ProMax installed some memory from Nanya (the same as what Apple used) and my system was doing things like this. After some time talking with ProMax, they decided to replace all of my memory with Kensington and the computer has been very stable since.

I’m not saying this is your problem, but its something to look into.

Something else that could be a consideration. FCP 6.02 was known to have some real bad bugs. After going to Leopard, we upgraded all of the software to its latest versions. Sure seems alot more stable. The only real bug with 6.03 is with LiveType but Apple left that out of FCS last year for a reason. Working with Motion isn’t that difficult. Now, working with older projects that have LiveType and the moving backgrounds may be a problem, but that can be worked around.

    Mac Pro OctoCore (2007 version)
    Leopard 10.5.2, Quicktime 7.4.5
    FCP 6.03 (Pro Apps Updated)
    8 gig of RAM
    ATI X1900XT
    AJA Kona 3 software 5.1
four internal drives (one 500 gig, three 750 gig)
On 750 gig external Maxtor backup drive (Time Machine)
