I feel that the TRUE power with FCP are the items that Gary has mentioned. Faster processing may be nice but it doesn’t really matter if the program cannot perform the everyday functions that we need.

In the Sony Transfer software, you need to click on the Logging button. There you can change the name of the clip.

But since you didn’t rename them from the start. I have to assume all of your clips say something like C00001.mov and so forth. If this is the case, just reimport them and relink them.

The 150 minute compression setting is equivalent to VHS tape in quality. Any more compression is going to look really bad.

That’s a silly and unnecessary workflow. Its adding too much work to your final output.

Its much easier to take your original DVCProHD 720p60 sequence and output it full size, then do your web video using Compressor to create a 480×270 video. Why do you want to make a letterbox Flash file? Its just wasted space and wasted file sizing.

Just make sure that you set Compressor for a 480×270 16×9 sizing. I do this type of work all of the time and have my saved settings in Compressor just for this. All I have to do is to drag and drop my web video setting to my DVCProHD video.

Well… That is a loaded question.

As for your issue, since you are working in standard def and have all of your footage captured. I would edit in 4×3 letterbox since alot of tape decks aren’t going to understand your anamorphic 16×9 master without lots of setup.

If a film festival has to do setup for your feature, they will usually pass on it as they have some many entries they would never get done with the judging.

Before doing anything, check with the festival for their standards.

I would suggest that if you need a 16×9 version, I would create a new timeline, remove any CG and have it upconverted to HD properly by someone with high end equipment or if you have a BlackMagic or AJA card, you can uprez it yourself to HD output using hardware scaling. Then you can capture you feature in HD 16×9 and place the CG back into your program (at proper HD sizing).

Using software to upscale any footage that will be projected is asking for trouble. Any artifacts that are in the video will definitely be seen on large screen projection.

Well, sorta….

Its not as easy as it should be BUT… you can re-import all of your footage using the Sony Transfer program outside of FCP. Hopefully, you use this program to log your footage, otherwise reconnection of your media may be a little difficult.

When making the jump to XDCAM from BetaSP or any other format, your workflow changes considerably. If you have the newest version of the the Transfer software, you’ll have to name your discs properly and log you clips in this software first before importing them into FCP. Otherwise, if you had done this, your only option is to Batch Capture using the old method using the SDI input of your capture card.
