Writing to XDCAM at a later date has always been a real problem, since XDCAM is not like an ordinary removable drive. The only solution here is to wait until you get an XDCAM unit in hand. You can use either the PDW-1500 deck or the PDW-V1 field player deck (which can record thru firewire using the Sony Transfer Software or thru ethernet using the Flip4Mac IMX Importer software).
Creating files for a hard is simple, too. When you have finished your program, you can export your sequence using File – Export – Quicktime Movie. When the dialog box pops up, look in the lower left corner and choose an IMX NTSC setting for your output. Keep in mind that for standard IMX footage there are three bit rates – 30, 40 and 50 mb/s. You’ll need to check with you client on which they want. IMX50 is definitely the best quality. You can then reimport these files into FCP if you need them. Be aware that this will take some time to render your sequences into an IMX file.

What is the original codecs used?
I ask because if the video is already half scale – another compression isn’t going to hurt it much if you use something like ProRes422.
FCP doesn’t play well with WMV and AVI files. They can be made to import but not good for editing entirely. Convert to something more friendly and every will run much better.

What is the intended output? Tape, DVD or Internet?
Can you explain in more detail what you need to do? Are you trying to output into different codecs like DV and HD formats all from the same timeline?

Ian, we need to know what format are starting from and what you plan to export to (Quicktime, tape or XDCAM disc).

Sounds like you are going to XDCAM disc… Keep in mind that IMX and MXF files can be different. SD XDCAM is an IMX format wrapped in an MXF file for playback on Sony XDCAM decks. MXF files can be made from other formats as well, such as Grass Valley Infinity and Ikegami EditCam. This is why FCP has trouble reading MXF files. It can read specific MXF files if told by specific software such as Flip4Mac XDCAM Importer, but its looking for an XDCAM disc on your network, not a single file on your hard drive.
Can you explain your workflow more thoroughly?

I was going to ask the same thing. Let me add (or re-iterate), look into your XSAN software and make sure that it is up to date.
You might just want to look at upgrading your XSAN software to the 2.0 version. I have heard of all kinds of horror stories with people using the XSAN in their systems. You need a dedicated person to maintain it properly. BUT… once it is configured fro your facility, it should be great!
Now, concerning your issues with FCP. Version 6.04 solved alot of these issues, but, as you know there is always going to be bugs with ANY software. The trick is to minimize them.

Good idea, Noah!
Noah is correct. When using external hard drives between PCs and Macs, you absolutely need to have them formated in a way that both can see the info. Natively, Mac can see a PC HD if its formated FAT32, but not NTFS, thus the program that Noah pointed out. I have done exactly what you need to do with a tiny Western Digital Passport drive between PC and Mac. Its formated as FAT32, which isn’t fast or current with today’s demands but it works.
Here’s another option… You could purchase MacDrive for you laptop and format the external HD to Mac OS Extended (not Journaled). This way your mac can see it fine and your PC can see it fine with decent performance on both.

One more tip. Kelly…
Try capturing in DV50 or ProRes422 for much much better quality images. If you have the drive space, Use ProRes422. The quality is outstanding compared to DV (which is almost the equivalent of VHS in my book).
When you try these codecs, you’ll see that your video is so much cleaner than regular DV.

You are double clicking on your clip to get it into the viewer? Also, after you make the correction, click back on your timeline to refresh your Canvas and output monitor.
If you are doing this and still nothing is happening, trash your prefs and restart FCP.
