XD storage Card – To PC Hard Drive – To FCP 6
Hello, I have just completed the shooting for my first project using the EX1. To dump the cards, I used sony’s card reader and clip browser software to get the footage to my PC Laptop (new HP DV9000). Now, I need to get it from my laptop to a buddy’s FCP 6 rig. I bought a 1TB western Digial drive with a firewire 800 interface. We tried to copy some footage off my laptop to an external USB2 drive formated for PC. It didn’t work out. My drive is still formating so I have not been able to check the firewire drive. I don’t know why it would read any different….. I’d really appreciate if somebody could walk me through the steps. I will share this knowledge with all other newbie EX1 users.
In short…. Can I move this from card to PC hard drive to Mac Hard Drive and what’s the best way?

As long as it is the BPAV folder you are moving it should move from camera to PC to Mac. The package is robust. I have done this without probs. Just keep the BPAV file intact until you get it onto the editing system, then import the clips you need into FCP via the file import command. This command opens the XDCAM transfer tool. From there add the BPAV file via the + button, choose the clips you want, import them to your project and you’re done.

It depends how the drive was formated on the PC- like was it NTFS or FAT-32? Mac and PC drive formats are not always cross-compatible. You might need an NTFS Mac plugin such as:

Noah is correct. When using external hard drives between PCs and Macs, you absolutely need to have them formated in a way that both can see the info. Natively, Mac can see a PC HD if its formated FAT32, but not NTFS, thus the program that Noah pointed out. I have done exactly what you need to do with a tiny Western Digital Passport drive between PC and Mac. Its formated as FAT32, which isn’t fast or current with today’s demands but it works.
Here’s another option… You could purchase MacDrive for you laptop and format the external HD to Mac OS Extended (not Journaled). This way your mac can see it fine and your PC can see it fine with decent performance on both.

yeah I’ve tried most of the solutions out there and I have to say performance is best with least amount of trouble going NTFS and Paragon. It just works like you’d imagine it should.

We had a NTFS drive in our shop and it loaded under 10.5.4
