I also posted this question in the Sony XDCam forum. We’re new to XDCam after years of editing with Beta SP. Down the road, after all the media has been deleted from the computer, is there an XDCam equivalent of “batch capture” to restore the media? With tape, you select all the offline clips, tell FCP to batch capture, and it will redigitize the media from the original tapes and restore the timeline. Is there a way to do this with XDCam disks? Thanks.

    Well, sorta….

Its not as easy as it should be BUT… you can re-import all of your footage using the Sony Transfer program outside of FCP. Hopefully, you use this program to log your footage, otherwise reconnection of your media may be a little difficult.

When making the jump to XDCAM from BetaSP or any other format, your workflow changes considerably. If you have the newest version of the the Transfer software, you’ll have to name your discs properly and log you clips in this software first before importing them into FCP. Otherwise, if you had done this, your only option is to Batch Capture using the old method using the SDI input of your capture card.

We’re unable to rename the clips inside the log and transfer software. We’re using the latest download, v.2.7 on the Mac. We’re also using the PDW-U1 drives, which apparently don’t allow you to write to the disk at all. If we connect the camera to FCP, I’m able to rename the disk, but we cannot change any clip names. Are we doing something wrong? I suppose if we rename the clips on the disk and then import them, then if we need to reload them in the future the media will easily reconnect. It’s just that we’re unable to rename the clips. Thanks for your help.

In the Sony Transfer software, you need to click on the Logging button. There you can change the name of the clip.

But since you didn’t rename them from the start. I have to assume all of your clips say something like C00001.mov and so forth. If this is the case, just reimport them and relink them.
