Do you a VAR who will let you “demo” a Panasonic deck? Call around. We all need favors from time to time, and free deck usage is not that hard to come by.
Just an idea… By the way, the reason that the Sony HVR-M10U can read DVCAM is because DVCAM is a Sony product. Not being a smarta.. but just letting you know why.

Let me jump into this…
I think what people are missing right now, is the fact that the software is only as good as the person or talent can speak. Meaning, if your talent speaks clearly, the software will work pretty accurately. If your talent has alot of sloppy speech or slurred words, of course, the software is going to choke.
Different areas of the country will have different speech patterns. Gary is the Chicago area and folks around there speak very clearly. Whereas, I’m in the Memphis, TN area, and people here speak slow and slurred – southern – with a bunch of local terms that only we would understand. This makes ANY speech recognition software choke or at best, struggle.
Think about it… BUT, this is a real start.

First thing…. Have everything legal and consider rebuilding your computer by installing a fresh legal copy of Mac OS on a new hard drive (or one that you can spare). Then install FCS. It will make a difference.
Do you have ANYTHING else connected firewire?

Hey… its a start in the right direction.
Could you imagine the possibilities if this were to work decently well. Closed Captioning would be a synch to do… Transcripts would be almost instantly created. WOW! Technology is absolutely amazing.
And the best is yet to come…

September 23, 2008 at 1:20 pm in reply to: Digitizing makes the clips start @ 00:00:00:00Let me ask you this…
How long have you seen this problem? What camera or cameras do you use? Have you set the cameras to record time code?
Without knowing too many details yet, I’ve seen this with my experience some time ago when I had your setup. It seems that it is caused by the cameras not recording time code properly. We use the Sony Z1U camcorders on a regular basis and by default the time code is set to Auto. That means time code could be drop frame or non-drop, it could start at zero at any time the tape had been searched or the camera had been shut off. Basically, it caused all sorts of problems without us knowing what was going on.
After setting the cameras to record time code and setting them to drop frame time code, all of our time code issues such as the one you are seeing stopped.
One more thing, check your User Preferences and see if you are setup to “Make New Clip” on time code break.
Oh yeah… it wouldn’t hurt to join the bandwagon and update your computer to the latest software either. If this is your bread and butter, you need to be up to date.

[Jason Jenkins] “The Panny monitors do a great job, IMO, of display both SD and HD and I have a good grasp of what it should look like.
“
Not on the Panasonic monitors that we have – BT-LH1700W and BT-LH2600W.SD video looks really degraded on these monitors but plays just fine on an SD monitor… So… You might want to check your signal on an SD monitor and see what it looks like.

No…. It seems to be a random selection of render files that are deleted. It’s not the same one every time.

[melanie leblond] “I am trying to cut HDV footage on a laptop mac (OS 10.4.11-1.67 Ghz processor-1.5gb memory) but when i play the timeline (same settings as footage) it constantly stops and the drop frame window appears too often. I can’t carry on like this…is it because my computer is not powerful enough? “
Are you trying to play this video from your internal hard drive? If so, that’s you problem. HDV is very processor intensive and needs full bandwidth of an external hard drive on your computer. Most any firewire 800 drive will work on simple projects.
[melanie leblond] ”
Also when i export a quick time (to Dv quality with QT convertor) it jerks a lot on the movements! I guess it is a field dominance problem …? “I would bet to guess you are right on this one. HD video is upper field dominate and SD video is lower field dominate. The best and easiest way to create DVDs is to use Compressor on your master HD timeline export and convert that to the DVD format. Then, you can drop those into DVDSP. OR if you want to… drop them into DVDSP and let it convert your video for you (this can be hit or miss if your settings are set correctly).

The pulldown on your footage is up to what the original footage was shot as. To find this out, you would have to contact the shooter is the tape wasn’t labeled as such.
As for XDCAM HD, the software is up to version 2.7.1. This could also be one of your problems. Go to Sony’s website and download the newest version. This will update FCP to the latest settings for XDCAM. I would bet this will solve alot of your XDCAM issues.
[alan hotchkiss] “Also, my 24-30 fps conversion pattern is set to 2:3:2:3. Is this correct? “
This setting is for your playback. I wasn’t sure if the LHe had this option. Its used to smoothing playback while editing 24p. If your sequence is setup properly and your playback is still a little jittery, you’ll change this setting to another pulldown pattern to smooth it out. You may have to play around with the offset.

Hmmm…
I don’t get it… Why doesn’t your Kona LHe have any way to input HD? Its an HD capture card.
Tell us more about your system setup. What version of the Kona LHe drivers do you have?
[alan hotchkiss] “One; I’m getting a funky strobing on all of my dissolves. Can’t figure this out because my footage plays back fine. I’m using the easy setup sequence settings when I chose the HDV 720p 24 preset. “
What is your monitoring device? Hopefully, you are using your Kona LHe for monitoring the 720p24 signal. Next, your strobing you are seeing is because your monitor is a 60Hz monitor and your video is 24p. There’s a difference here. If you had a monitor that can output true 720p24, then you wouldn’t see any strobing. This is why we usually edit with a pull-down. We can edit 24p material and view a 30p signal so that the video plays back smoothly. But this all depends on your monitor and your capture card, if its setup correctly.
[alan hotchkiss] “Second; Since I can’t seem to ingest the HD footage from the XDCam via firewire, I’m forced to import it using the XDCam transfer tool. I thought I would just be able to throw this on my timeline and FCP would re-size, interpolate, whatever, but the footage plays back like it has field issues.”
Again, what version of the Sony Transfer program do you have? FCP is very capable of handling this.
Mixing footage can and does work well, IF you have a fast enough computer to deal with it. Personally, I don’t like taking all that time to render the video. Oh yeah… You do have FCP set to render you HDV video to ProRes, right? Its in the Render Control tab of your User Preferences.
The field issues you are seeing… Keep in mind, there are different flavors of 24p. There’s 24p native and 24p with Pull Down. Sony XDCAM uses 24p with Pull Down. If your timeline is 24p native, you have to remove the pulldown to get your video compatible. Sounds to me like your are having a pulldown issue here. Again, the pulldown is so that you can edit using a 60Hz monitor that isn’t capable of 24p, which, most monitors fall into this category.
Check your video and see if you HDV 720p24 is native or has pulldown. I would bet that its native. To get the XDCAM more friendly, you’ll need a plugin that will remove the pulldown and make it native 24p.
