I have been doing a ton of editing at my school for a project so fellow students could observe but needed to take my work home to finish the project. The problem was that the machines at school were a later version of final cut. So now I was stuck updating to 10.5.4 for the OS and 4.0.6 for final cut.

After all the updates were complete my firewire capture no longer works. When I proceed to capture a file Final Cut closes completely. If I try to watch the video coming out of my camera before recording it plays at about 1/4 FPS and progressively gets worse.

I have checked my processors during this time and see no unusual tasking. I am able to capture a m2t file just fine at full quality so that makes me think it is something with Final Cut. I am unfortunately running a Hackintosh but my software is purchased (school discount 😉 )
SO any ideas of what happen? Did my firewire card possibly get a new driver from the OS upgrade that final cut doesn’t like? Is there a setting that could cause this? Any input would be great!

    Try looking here:

This seems to be the answer to many of these kind of problems.

    Worth a shot.

Wow thanks for the quick response I went through that cache and deleted all the old updates but unfortunately no go with capturing. It seems very odd because I can see and control my camera but it is like it is getting a low data rate…but as I said earlier I can capture the m2t file no problem.

Again thanks for the response but this didn’t seem to work.

First thing…. Have everything legal and consider rebuilding your computer by installing a fresh legal copy of Mac OS on a new hard drive (or one that you can spare). Then install FCS. It will make a difference.

Do you have ANYTHING else connected firewire?

Well unfortunately you can never truly have a legal copy of the OS installed through the Hackintosh way. I think I did see something that was actually a piece of hardware to plug in but required certain motherboards. It instead requires a modified install of the OS which was a ton of work to get going. But you do have a Mac Pro for around $1200. I think I will capture and covert m2t before I reformat that thing, its just too much time.

Nothing plugged in through firewire (except camera), only USB2.

Alright well instead of doing everything in M2t format and then converting using $50 dollar software, I just went out a bought a nice new Firewire 400/800 card from a electronics store with a good return policy. Sure enough the capturing in FCP is now working. Thanks for all the help guys see around the forum.
