FCP automatically assumes center pan on audio. If you need it split, you’ll have to change the audio pan to right and left.

    September 24, 2009 at 2:45 pm in reply to: FWIW – Kona3 7.0 drivers

    I’m with Michael…

I, too, am using FCP7 with an AJA Kona 3 card using version 7.0 drivers.

There are some issues that need to be worked out. In our case, its an issue with 1440×1080 video. If I have the VANC option checked, my video will shift down about 20-30 lines and play perfectly. If I uncheck the VANC option, the video is perfectly framed but now my audio skips terribly and slows down.

This is a MAJOR issue for us in our workflow. This occurs under driver versions 6.5 and 7.0 (standard and NDD versions).

[walter biscardi] “That’s the big problem with the HDV Firewire to ProRes transfer. We’ve discussed this before on the Cow and all of us have suggested you switch to Kona for ProRes ingest. You lose the Start / Stop detection, but you get out of this anamorphic ProRes issue. “

Yes, Walter, you are absolutely correct and I agree whole-heartedly. BUT why is it that Apple gave us this option (maybe not knowing this issue) and it doesn’t work properly and was not fixed in FCP7?

    That’s my question here.

[walter biscardi] “You shouldn’t have to render everything as you edit though, you should be able to edit in realtime dynamic RT and then just render at the end of your edit. “

I am well aware of this and this is what we do. But the fact remains that you have to render everything, not just those clips affected by filters and graphics.

It looks to me that Apple has goofed on this or like I said maybe they didn’t know or didn’t test this out properly.

September 10, 2009 at 4:14 pm in reply to: Major FCP7 Bug OR AJA Kona Bug?

[Mike Allen] “Why not capture HDV (through Kona) directly to ProRes 1080?”

I’ve gotten this alot lately… But when you have say something like 8 or more tapes and your show goes out to broadcast in 5 days. That don’t leave much time for logging… So…. What you need to do is capture everything thru firewire using HDV-ProRes capture which uses a Start-Stop detection for each clip so that you have all of you clips already separated, ready for edit.

Capturing thru the Kona is the best quality but when you have a large number of tapes and lots of clips on those tapes, it can takes many days to log and capture.

Thus the need for capturing thru firewire. BUT, obvisiouly there is a major trade off. ProRes is a square pixel format and HDV (XDCAM HD) is non-square. One would think if you do this ProRes conversion on the fly that it would be full raster… NO… It’s not. Thus the problem.

And the AJA Kona products don’t really do HDV or XDCAM HD settings. It will show the media properly by setting your Easy Setup to something like ProRes422 or DVCPRoHD. But it is problematic at best when outputting to DVD or to the web. Its very slow to write to a Quicktime file sometimes.

    Its frustrating at best….

Just another feature that Apple added that doesn’t quite work as it is intended.

    September 3, 2009 at 3:41 pm in reply to: 4:3 aspect ratio turns into 720 x 480

Well… that is standard. This all depends on what codec are you using.

If you are using a non-square pixel codec, then Quicktime will show it slightly elongated. Quicktime is a square pixel program, and will adjust most of the time for most codecs.

Can you fill me on on some more details? What codec are you editing with, and what codec are you export to? Why do you need to export your video? For what purpose?

    I don’t understand your issue.

4:3 aspect ratio is 720×480 (DV codec (4:2:0 or 4:1:1)) or 720×486 (everything else besides DV in SD video (4:2:2)).

September 2, 2009 at 2:36 pm in reply to: Another FCP7 Bug – the “Share” function

    Let me add….

You can send to Compressor, use any preset you want and then burn the DVD using the Share menu’s settings.

Its the default compression settings in the Share menu that have a real issue.

Have you tried Motion or Shake?

After Effects can do this, too…

August 31, 2009 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Major FCP7 Bug OR AJA Kona Bug?

[walter biscardi] “What’s the difference? You can capture entire tapes using the Kona just as easily as using Firewire.

We control the decks via Firewire.

We capture through the Kona. “

This is what workflow we have used for years, converting to DVCProHD. But now, since more work has come in the door and we have more to do. We needed to look for a more streamlined faster workflow (still working on this…). We work primarily with XDCAM HD (35 mbit) and HDV.

[walter biscardi] “If you want to capture In to Out, just set an In Point at the head, Out Point at the tail.

I don’t see the difference in this or what your’e doing except for that Start / Stop detect feature, which Make New Clip at each Timecode Break will also do”

We’ve tried this but what you end up with is one large clip unless you have hard timecode breaks. Start/Stop is a different animal. Start/Stop would be the answer to everyone’s capturing headaches, if they could do this from any type of capture. I would do this in a heart beat, but we haven’t had such luck yet.

We haven’t tried to see if FCP7’s “Make New Clip” on timecode break works this way. I’ll try it today.

[walter biscardi] “I can’t see it taking more than a day and a half to capture all the tapes in. “

It wouldn’t if there weren’t about 100 takes on each tape. The more clips on a tape, the longer to log and capture.

August 31, 2009 at 4:28 pm in reply to: Major FCP7 Bug OR AJA Kona Bug?

[walter biscardi] “So you’re converting HDV to ProRes via Firewire and not the Konas?”

    Yes.

[walter biscardi] “I can say that footage converted via the Kona to ProRes in FCP 6 is presenting no issues in FCP 7, but then it comes through as full square 1920×1080 when converted that way.”

Yes, again… I can say that you’re 100% right about this. BUT, here’s the problem with capturing this way under a time constraint. Most shows (weekly episodes) can have around 7 – 10 HDV tapes. Logging and capturing (the best quality method) the old way gets extremely time intensive. Capturing thru firewire, I can do this in a day and then another day to filter thru the footage. Logging and capturing the footage can take upwards of 3 – 4 days (unless I don’t wanna sleep).
