Thank you, Andy. It’s great to see that someone else finally this out. We also figured out the Batch Export work around.
Apple dropped the ball on this one.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Please forgive my ignorance, but where did they transcode to ProRes happen before FCP7? Via the Sony software? “
No. You have to do this either thru Media Manger (which I’m not a fan of doing this) or thru Batch Capturing the footage.
See, we are doing this because there is so much footage its faster to import. log it and recapture it into a higher quality codec. This used to work with older versions of FCP.

Yea….
Someone who’s finally heard about this.
We are using the 2.8 and 2.9 versions of the XDT. And not, I haven’t tried reverting to an older version… I’ll give it a shot.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Sorry, Wayne, I am learning at your expense here, but you have log and captured, you want to recap, just like you would for tape, is that what you’re saying? “
No… In order to import the media native into FCP, we have to use a program built by Sony called XDCAM Transfer in order to import natively into FCP. The program rewraps the files into Quicktime and then imports the files into FCP. XDCAM HD (not the new 422) records the same pixel aspect as HDV – 1440×1080.
We have a project that will be graphics intensive and I’d rather work in ProRes422 for this. So… I import my media, log it and then recapture it into ProRes422 so that we may conserve space on our SAN.
[Jeremy Garchow] “By the way, MXF4mac has a new component that supports xdcam HD (just released this week).”
We have the Telestream Flip4Mac that does this also but we only use this with the PDW-1500 which is XDCAM MXF format thru our network, but the XDHD deck do not have the network option on them.

The problems I have seen all dealt with the default settings. I’ve learned to use the Share function and send to Compressor and let Compressor make the DVD or BluRay discs. Works great. So far…

XDHD can only be acquired by log and capture or thru the Sony Transfer software program. Log and Transfer works with XD EX, P2, AVCHD, etc. But not with XDCAM HD (XDHD).

Ok…
We have lots of footage that we shot in XDCAM HD and DV (needing to be up-converted). This project will require lots of graphics to be inserted and some composited frames. XDCAM HD isn’t a great choice for this, so we decided that we would import all of the XDCAM HD media, go thru all of it (log it) and they re-digitize it into ProRes422.
Well, we are at the point of re-digitizing it, and found that the media cannot be captured into anything else except XDCAM HD. When you try to Batch Capture all of the footage, FCP brings up the Log and Transfer window. This is the problem. FCP 6.05 didn’t do this and neither did earlier versions. Problem is that XDCAM HD cannot be imported thru Log and Transfer (unless there’s something that I don’t know, yet).
One of the other guys working here did figure a work-around. You have to export a Batch List, go into Excel and manually delete all references to XDCAM and the 1440 aspect ratio. After doing this, reimport the Batch List, and THEN you can Batch Capture into ANY codec you want.
Kinda blows the tapeless workflow all to pieces, doesn’t it?

XDHD? Not the EX series…

Normally, this is true…
But I’m pretty sure that Maria is using XDHD because she said she was using the transfer program. If she were using the EX series then Log and Transfer would be used.
BTW, this also happens with HDV-ProRes conversion.

Anytime you drop in multiple channel of single audio tracks (Sony looks at this is mono audio), FCP will assume its mono audio and pan to the center. If you notice when you write back to disc that you have to make your sequence dual mono audio.
This applies all of the time.
