“Share” – a new feature and full of bugs

I have 26 half hour episodes of a tv series all shot HDV and in 26 individual projects in their original component forms. They have now been mastered to HDCAM and sent off to the distributor.

I need to create Blu-ray’s and DVD’s of the series, 4 episodes per disk.

So I just want ‘Share’ to create the files and then I will move them over to a PC authoring station to create the Blu-ray and DVD’s using Adobe Encore.

    The problem…
Using FCP 7’s new ‘Share’, 17 out of the 26 eps went to H264 just fine, 9 failed with ‘share error’.
All 26 of these projects were loaded individually and ‘share’ invoked each time individually – ie no batch processing.

0 (ZERO) out of the 26 eps successfully went to DVD; yep NONE. Every ep came up with ‘share error’.

I was not using any created clusters; I tried that and it failed on every episode, blu-ray AND DVD. I was not changing any parameters, just using the default setting.

    The solution…
    Blu-ray H264 creation –
After I got the ‘share error’ I closed the project and restarted the Mac. Reopened the project and started the ‘share’ procedure again. It went thru OK the second time without changing anything as did the next ep but failed on the 3rd ep which restarted the whole shutdown/restart process again. So what does this mean?… A MAJOR MEMORY LEAK – seems Apple are picking up bad habits from Misco$oft.

    The solution…
    DVD creation –
Moved the H264 files into my PC authoring station and got it to do the conversion in Adobe Encore which were also used to do the Blu-ray disks.

    The MAC system…
MacPro 8 core 8 gig RAM 8 terra raid Leopard and other software (latest) and Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme.

I get paid to do beta testing by some large software/hardware companies and if I am going to be beta testing these new FCP 7 features I think I should be paid for that work as well.

Anyone else want to share their ‘Share’ experiences?

    Baz

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

I’ll share mine. I don’t use it. I can’t get it to work either. I just use ref movies in Compressor.

Likewise, and I don’t render to H264 for Blu_Ray copies.
Bad artifacting and not as clear as mpeg.

I’ve been doing BluRays over two years now. H.264’s are a pain in the rear for BluRay.

We do MPEG-2’s and have zero issues. The solution is switch over to MPEG-2 which is the predominant delivery format for BluRay discs.

The problems I have seen all dealt with the default settings. I’ve learned to use the Share function and send to Compressor and let Compressor make the DVD or BluRay discs. Works great. So far…

It works for me. We’ve used the Share button to make Blu Ray screeners encoded with h264. It works, it’s convenient and the disks look great in playback.

A client used one of our screeners to project their film to troops in Guantanamo last month. They were blown away by the quality of the disk, we were blown away by the ease of creating it.

I wonder what you do differently.

    Read the manual, perhaps?

Actually I have been able to burn H.264 Blu_Rays using the Share function just fine, but the quality is not as good as burning to mpeg-2. Very easy to see the difference in side by side comparisons of the same footage, especially when projected or played through a good monitor.

I just created 60 Blu-ray discs in the testing of my backgrounds. I had zero issues that you have described. The Share failure did happen to me, though, when I was doing a demo where I had to move my files to a new computer at the last minute. So, the Share failure might have to do with corrupt permissions. Next time you run into this trouble, try trashing prefs. Worked for me.

you know you could of paid for a compressHD card in the first couple of shows. just export QT from FCP using the Matrox H.264 and directly export the files… done. hours and hours saved.
