Go into the camera’s menu and turn off iLink convert. That’s it.

April 13, 2010 at 9:27 pm in reply to: Anyone notice that USB 3.0 is AWOL from the new MacBook Pros?[David Roth Weiss] “I guess there will be USB 3.0 express cards for the 17” MBP soon enough, but still, it just seems like Apple is hamstringing every new model they bring to market, including the entire iMac lineup.
Anyone have a different take on the subject? “
I think Apple has this sort of fear of a industry standard, if you notice… Now, when it comes to their technologies. You better believe, they’ll introduce a new model right away.

[Glyn Bowerman] “When they come in, although they were filmed @ highest quality 50mbps, FCP converts them to around 7.1mbps…why is this and is this normal? “
What you are seeing is two different numbers… XDCAM HD 422 records at 50 mbits/second, it imports into FCP as 7.1 mbytes/second. There’s a difference in bits and bytes. There’s a bunch of math here and I’m sure you really don’t want to know the full explanation… but the numbers you are seeing are correct.
[Glyn Bowerman] “I’m on a really steep learning curve here chaps & its a bit daunting not knowing the best way to approach it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
PS. I have an AJA Io HD as well, so have read that ProRes is the way to go..but its a minefield of conflicting information! “
Let me ask you this, what is your primary format for your edit? Is it mostly or all XDCAM HD? If so, use the Sony Software Transfer to import all of your media and set FCP to render your XDCAM HD renders to ProRes 422. You can do this in your User Prefs. I would suggest that you edit in XDCAM HD, unless you have lots of graphics. In that case, I would batch capture my footage into ProRes 422 or even DVCProHD.
Let me give you a little tip here. If you need to edit in ProRes 422 or some other codec, for whatever reason, import your XDCAM HD footage, log it, then take the media offline and batch capture into another codec. This will save time, instead of looking at all the media like we do on tape.

[Lee Warner] “The reason I want to go the Kona 3 route is for possible work with Red 2K projects.”
Well… That can throw a wrench into things.
You are correct in your assumption. You’ll have to purchase the Kona3 if you plan on working with RED footage and then having to purchase a mini-converter to convert your analog to SDI. AJA makes plenty of those to choose from also.

Ever heard the phrase… “Fix one, break two.”
This seems to be the case every time there is an update to ANY software package.
The lesson here… Clone your OS drive before applying ANY updates, so that you can revert back to a safe version if problems arise.

I would suggest that you look at the Kona LHi. It’s capable of such work as well as high-end HD work.

Let me be the first to say… Welcome to the COW, Jon!
As for backup needs with P2, I would suggest getting a BluRay writer (external or internal) and backing up to BluRay. We use the 50 gig discs to backup all of our show masters (and P2 footage, when shot by a freelance shooter). I also use this to backup very large projects that are larger than dual layer DVD’s.
BluRay drives are getting cheaper and discs are becoming more affordable. Its completely reliable for up to 50 years, from what I hear.
We use XDCAM HD as our primary format and XDCAM discs are about $30 each for 23 gig. At the moment, I can purchase 50 gig BD-R discs for about $17.50. So, if you do the math, I can get about 6 XDCAM HD 1080p30 shows on one 50 gig BD-R, as compared to 2 30 minutes shows on an XDCAM HD disc (at 35 mbit HQ setting).

From everything that your telling me, Anthony. It looks like everything is fine.
I think you may be expecting too much from FCP. Yeah, rendering does suck when using XDCAM HD but its what you have to do without a capture card to change codecs.
The only thing I would question about your workflow is why you key in FCP and not in Motion? Motion has the same keyers as FCP. It just does them differently. ANYTIME you use keying filters, you’ll have to render. Sometimes longer renders mean better quality. Personally, I’d trust the Magic Bullet keyers more than the free ones inside of FCP.

April 8, 2010 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Why is rendering XDCAM 422 as slow as Molasses in a SD timeline. There you go!
That’s the proper workflow for doing just this sort of thing!
If you shoot HD, edit HD and down-convert on output. Its that easy.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, down-convert your footage to SD when editing SD. Your render times will be much shorter and you’ll be pulling your hair out less.
