HDV in final cut
Posted by Jenny Himmelrick on April 13, 2010 at 3:45 pmI’m having problems with FCP not reading my HDV device. I’m using my Sony HDR-FX7 to capture the footage into Final cut and I’m having problems finding the right settings. The footage was shot in HDV, not DV, but when I try to capture it with the HDV settings it wont read it. I’ve got it to where it’ll capture the footage if I set the capture preset to HDV-apple intermediate codec, but I dont want to use that setting b/c I know that it will create larger files. It also captures the footage if I set it to DV-NTSC, but I know for a fact it was shot with the HDV setting and not DV. Could there be another factor that would make it not read my footage as HDV? I just want to make sure I’m getting the best quality out of my footage as possible.
Some help please! Thanks!

April 13, 2010 at 4:07 pmIf indeed it will cature when you set to DV, that indIcates your deck is set improperly, and is down-converting to DV. That’s a menu setting in the deck or camera.

April 13, 2010 at 4:54 pmI made sure to switch it from auto to HDV on my camera b/c I was thinking the same thing, but FCP still wouldnt read it. I’ll try playing around with it more and see what happens.
Here’s another random question that you might be able to help me with too…I’m collecting HD footage from clients for a project, but I only have my HDV camera and my computer to view the footage with. Once again I’m using FCP to edit it. Besides the clients sending me an external harddrive with the footage on it, would they be able to put the footage on a DV tape that I can use my HDV camera to capture it into FCP? Whats the best format for them to send me if I need the HD quality and I only have my camera and computer to read it. Random question, i know, just curious to what other ppl think.
Thanks.

There’s another setting in the menu somewhere that you’re missing. Many miss that one. read the manual if necessary to find it.

They have no choice, if all they have is DV, that’s what you’ll get. If they have HDV, then get them to deliver HDV. But, you can’t pick and choose what you output to DV tape. Better for them to deliver files on the hard drive to you, so long as they are full res files, not files compressed for the Web, of course.

April 13, 2010 at 7:51 pmok, so I played around some more and shot some more footage making sure that my camera was set to HDV for recording and also set to HDV in the menu for the VCR on the camera. When connecting to my computer, I made sure that the Rec in/out was set to HDV and I also made sure that the ilink connectivity setting on the camera was set to off so it wouldnt convert the footage to DV, but FCP said:
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.”
I’ve read the camera manual over and over, I’m sure I have it all set right.
I set my FCP settings to capture preset: HDV and for Device control I’ve switched it on and off with HDV firewire, HDV firewire basic and Sony HDV device and it never works.
Like i said b4, it will still capture if I set FCP to DV settings or to HDV apple intermediate codec, just not when set to HDV.
I dont get it.

April 13, 2010 at 9:32 pmGo into the camera’s menu and turn off iLink convert. That’s it.

April 15, 2010 at 3:09 pmiLink connectivity has to be on – downconvert off.
make sure no firewire cables are plugged in until after your settings have changed.
make sure camera is on before plugging in. relaunch fcp if necessary.
double check capture settings in fcp = try hitting playback on camera directly and see if the image previews in log and capture.
