  • Anyone notice that USB 3.0 is AWOL from the new MacBook Pros?

USB 3.0 is conspicuously absent from all of the new MBPs announced earlier today by Apple.

It’s just silly that everyone else in the business is releasing USB 3.0 hard drives and other devices, all with very significant advantages over USB 2.0 and even eSATA, then Apple comes along and releases its new lineup of MacBook Pros without USB 3.0 capability in a single model, or even as an expensive add-on.

I guess there will be USB 3.0 express cards for the 17″ MBP soon enough, but still, it just seems like Apple is hamstringing every new model they bring to market, including the entire iMac lineup.

Anyone have a different take on the subject?

I think Apple has this sort of fear of a industry standard, if you notice… Now, when it comes to their technologies. You better believe, they’ll introduce a new model right away.

Yea, I noticed too. No eSATA, no USB3 (and no ExpressCard on the 13/15 so called “Pro” laptops)g … but hey, you can sorta flick scroll with the trackpad, that’ll keep the pro’s happy right? Maybe they’ll support that in FCP8 :-/

Seriously tho, it is a bit disappointing in light of some of these great USB3 based product announcements.

Considering they dropped FW400 from the newer Mac Pros and the I/O debacle of the iPad, I guess Apple is intent on creating devices that increasingly don’t talk to the outside world.

Maybe that would explain why the only part of an iPhone that doesn’t really work is the phone, and why Apple didn’t even bother putting a phone in the iPad.

Given the problems that Snow Leopard has created for various esata cards and the ongoing driver issues, I would have thought USB 3 is an obvious contender for a more universal high speed drive connector for the HD editing world.

All of my work comes from editors delivering their finals to me on an external drive. I have steadfastly avoided esata and it is lucky that ProRes has worked off FW800 drives so far.

Everyone in this house (except me) has an iTouch on our wifi network so yes the phone part is avoided.

The iPad? Can’t see a single use for it in my world so far with or without a phone.
