So far, everybody is right. It’s a subjective thing when it comes to the looks. You can pick apart each camera until you’re blue in the face. But the real thing to consider is what is best for your needs. My house is using XDCAM HD and has been using XDCAM for the past year with absolutely no problems at all. Yes, XDCAM HD is a type of MPEG2 and it has a 1/2″ chip and it records 35 mb/s.
And DVCPRO HD is a 2/3″ chip camera and it’s 100 mb/s.
But here’s somethng else to consider… XDCAM HD is 1440×1080 (in camera) and DVCPRO HD is 1280×1080 (inside of FCP).
As of the current moment, FCP doesn’t really have support for XDCAM HD without the Sony software and its only 25 mb/s. BUT who says you can’t capture it at 8-bit or 10-bit Uncompressed. Or, in my case, we digitize it using DVCPRO HD. Yeah, I know… But its the only solution at the moment and if you are really wondering about the features for keying, then you should be editing in 10-bit Uncompressed anyway.
So… basically it comes down to what you like best. Sony or Panasonic

It works great… EXCEPT for the export feature. I have not gotten this to work YET! At the moment, I’m still having to export to my PDW-1500 since we still broadcast in SD. I have gone over the entire PDF file to make sure that I didn’t miss something…
BUT IT STILL DOESN’T WORK!

Sony’s only problem at the moment is disk space… It will not be available until they can sucessfully double the size of the disk to 46 gig. This was told to me by a Sony representitive, not my sales rep.
Besides…. Just ask Jody Eldridge or Mark Falstead what they think about the current 1/2″ camera. I’d be more inclined to listen to someone who has shot of a major news programs or National Geographic than what other think of the stats of the camera. Sony has done some really amazing things with the 1/2″ chip cameras.

Dave is correct!
Most everybody doesn’t see that 25 mb/s signal as a real tv quality signal. Unless you are a trained engineer and know how to spot a 25 mb/s signal, I’ll bet they will never know…
Anyway… the 35mb/s signal is so clean and pristine, that I would bet you couldn’t tell it wasn’t HDCAM. At NAB this year, Sony had both cameras side by side for a comparision and even had two distinguished videographers who commented about the quality.
I would have to say the problem here is what we are used to using… Years ago, we said that Digibeta was the digital standard and now we are going to have to change that standard to a Digital HiDef standard such as HDCAM… But here’s the problem, not everybody can afford the HDCAM system, so Sony came up with XDCAM HD.
Just ponder it for a little while…

The problem here, Tony, is the equipment dealers. Everybody, including Sony, is pushing the Somy Luma LCD monitors. Its only when you push an engineer at Sony will you find out that these monitors are not for color correction. Even, ProMax is selling this monitor on pre-configured systems.
I don’t get it at all… The only LCD that is color gradeable is the Panasonic LCDs and they still say theirs isn’t perfect. The only CRTs left that you can buy are expensive and have to be used if you want to purchase one. Something about government regulations and CRTs.

Go into Preferences, look on the screen and change the drop down that say “Make New Clip” to “Warn After Capture”. That will stop that annoying problem.

That’s interesting… I don’t have any experience with version 2 of the software but I do remember that you had to manually import all of the files into FCP after selecting them and giving them a location after the conversion to Quicktime. Maybe the software is still the same.
Here’s a question. Do you have the machine in another room? If not, just go to Sony’s website and you can now download the Mac & FCP software that will allow you to import directly using the firewire connection. The software is much better and easier to use, I think.
