One other question… Is this DVD project a wide spread release or a client disc used for corporate situations?
Also… Let’s think about this. You say that your final output will be DVD and Web. Whether, you shoot it in 1080i or 720p, they’ll both look the same when down-converted to DVD. So, I’d suggest shooting 720p24, editing in 720p24 and output from there.
With concerns to DVDs… Even in this day and age, I still get folks that cannot ready DVD-R or DVD+R discs that I create. When it comes down to it, its all on the end user’s equipment and there is no way you can plan on that. You have to plan for the majority of user base.

Its called audio scrubbing… and that’s a feature that works globally, not by project. You’ll have to turn it on in the View Menu.

This is very very true. Unless your outputting to XDCAM HD, which its fine.

Exactly, but if your computer is fast enough and almost everyone here has one now… You don’t have to render the XDCAM footage in your ProRes422 timeline.

Talk with any of the experienced engineers at Sony and they will shed some light for you. XDCAM HD and all of this flavors of XDCAM are based on the Long-GOP method of HDV. The engineers will tell you that originally when this was designed, HDV and XDCAM were designed to be an acquisition format ONLY and that you really needed to transcode it to an editable I-Frame codec like ProRes422.
Sure… People edit on it all of the time and the files sizes are wonderful compared to others, BUT, as most of you found out, outputting HDV and XDCAM can be very lengthy. This is entirely because most editing system can ONLY edit using the I-Frame method, not Long-GOP. Therefore, you have to go through a conversion process to output.
This is the reason why Apple came up with the HDV-ProRes422 conversion for HDV material and why ProRes422 works so beautifully well with XDCAM material. If you notice on the Render Control tab in the User Preferences, you’ll see in the middle of the dialog box, Codec. This gives you the option to render any HDV and XDCAM material in the ProRes422 codec for the best quality.
We can debate about this all day… But there are lots of folks here who make lots of money knowing this feature and the results of this feature. Take their word and try it.

You must have had a camera man also record 30 sec interviews in 15 minute chunks… Instead of 30 files of 30 sec interviews, you have one file 15 minutes in length with 30 30 sec interviews. Its tough to break the older guys from just “rolling on tape”. That concept of the record button being clicked off and then clicked back on to create a new file is just too difficult for some.

Can’t say I have any experience with LG but I did purchase a Pioneer BR-DL burner from the videoguys.com for just a little over $200 and I can burn a 50 gig disc in less time than I can a standard 4.7 gig DVD. Great investment!

Yes, Don… The memory is installed wrong. Apple suggest same size memory across both risers.
So… On the older style Intel computers, memory should be install in equal pairs across risers. So if you want 8 gig of total memory, you need to install (2) 2 gig bars on Riser A and (2) 2 gig bars on Riser B. This is done for best performance in FCP.

You get this same banding when using the vignette plug also. Whether the plugin be from Apple, Noise Industries, Tiffen or anyone, you’ll see this banding. Yes, 10-bit rendering does make it look good but Stephen is right, most all broadcast facilities are airing in 8-bit, so the banding comes back on broadcast.
