How to stop colour banding in vignettes?
Hi, I like to put a very slight vignette on programmes when I’m doing the final grade and graphics etc. I used to use a pre-made vignette knocked up in Photoshop but now I use a colour matte with a mask shape cut out so I can adjust it easily for different shots if I want to. I used the ‘Soft Light’ transfer mode for both of these as I like the subtler effect it has to some other transfer modes, and I use it at varying opacity, but mostly between 36-46% I also grade in ‘Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2’, and for SD PAL broadcast.
My problem is, I get weird colour-banding sometimes, mostly noticeable over mid darkness areas of flatish colour. Is there something I can do to prevent that?

Hi Michael,
The banding is a problem associated with the 8b.
You may try add a bit of noise to the vignette, or render in 10b.
If you render in 10b you can add a bit of blur to your Photoshop file (8b RGB).

Rafael is right, BUT:
10 bit does do the trick, but is not the solution, as your work probably ends up in 8 bit anyways…
(Broadcast is most of the time 8 bits nowadays…)Experiment with noise….

Question: is his photoshop file of the vignette the wrong resolution, and could this be causing banding when it is scaled too much?

You get this same banding when using the vignette plug also. Whether the plugin be from Apple, Noise Industries, Tiffen or anyone, you’ll see this banding. Yes, 10-bit rendering does make it look good but Stephen is right, most all broadcast facilities are airing in 8-bit, so the banding comes back on broadcast.
