The problems that people are seeing are completely related to memory (RAM). Mac Pro systems are a completely difference platform for Apple. Please remember this!
The manufacturer, the sizes and placement of RAM are extremely crucial in Mac Pro using Final Cut Studio. I, too, had this issue when I first purchased my Mac Pro BUT contacting the vendor I bought the computer from (ProMax) and they too discovered this issue. ProMax completely replaced my memory with Kensington memory and I have had no issues with memory since.

Carbon Copy Cloner is the best way to go… and the safest. Because you already have the drive ready to boot and waiting with your older working version. Its well worth the investment in a drive.

This could be due to the memory. Apple and Final Cut on a Mac Pro system state that you need to have memory placed in a certain order (and preferably from the same manufacturer) in pairs. Final Cut works best with multiples of 4 gigs like 4, 8, 16 gigs of RAM.
Having 9 gigs will slow down FCP substantially. Remove the 1 gig of RAM (the two 512) and you will see an increase in performance of FCP. The other 8 gig need to be 1 gig bars of RAM in order to work properly. Take a look at this paper from Apple…

I have replaced the 512s on my system and put in 8 gig of Kensington memory which is the most stable memory available on a Mac Pro.

I did notice one little strange thing… In order for the export to work, you have to go thru the menu at the top of the screen. If you try to use right-click (control click), it will not work still. It gives an error message saying that the current settings do not match the deck.

I upgraded to FCS2. I didn’t really think is was necessary to do a clean install since my system has been running fine.
The only issue that I have had is anything dealing with the Sony IMX50 codec and nothing else. I have created my own Easy Setup and it works. Its just an issue with the Sony Transfer software. It will not let me export to IMX50 nor does it show up in my Easy Setup list of options to use.
Other than that, It works just fine. At the moment, I’m exporting to IMX40 to disc and then making my BetaSP master for broadcast. It seems to work fine and I can’t see a noticable difference in quality when the BetaSP dub is finished.

This is true… The lens has a tendency to “breathe” while zooming. Check out all of the lenses in your price range but I bet you, you’ll end up with the one Sony specs for the camera.

Ok, fellas… Let’s not make this too complicated.
The best way to upgrade or do a clean install is use or purchase a firewire drive (about 160 gig) and use Carbon Copy Cloner on your system to make a clone of your current system drive. Then you can either upgrade or do a clean install. If something goes wrong, just boot to the backup cloned drive and you’ll be right back where you started.
This is the best method for any major upgrade including an OS upgrade. Sure keeps the headaches to a bare minimum.

I agree… Output your program to HDV and use the deck to capture an SD version for your clients.
I do this all of the time with XDCAM HD. It works beautifully.

Don’t be scared to upgrade to FCS2. There is always fears with any upgrade. Just use Carbon Copy to make a backup of your hard drive before the upgrade.
FCS2 would be the best bet for you and what you are needing to do. I agree with Andy on the XDCAM HD thing. We always shoot using the HQ mode and mix with HDV all of the time. BUT, we do use capture cards and digitize to DVCProHD and ProRes all of the time.
Mixing formats on a time is extremely important this day and age, so the $500 investment would be very well worth it.
