Posted by James Kirk on July 16, 2007 at 2:36 pmI’m about to upgrade from Final Cut Studio 1 to 2.
Should I delete Final Cut Studio 1 before or after the install?Philemon Daniel replied 17 years, 9 months ago 9 Members · 15 Replies -

July 16, 2007 at 3:45 pmno, but if you copy the fcp.app file to another folder then copy
it back (don’t overwrite the new one though) you should be able
to run both versions. so I hear. -

July 16, 2007 at 4:36 pmWhat was the verdict? Uninstall studio 1 before install 2 or not?
why have both installed at once anyway?

July 16, 2007 at 4:41 pmI should have been more clear.
I don’t want to keep FC Studio 1 on the system, I only want the cleanest install of FC Studio 2. -

I have two drives on my G5. I used one for FCP 5.1.4 and used it for quite a while….STILL using it. When FCS2 came out, I couldn’t upgrade as I was in mid project. So what I did was copy the files off the secondary internal drive, reformatted that, then loaded the OS from scratch, upgrading to the latest and greatest. Then I installed FCS2. This way I have both, but on different drives. If and when I am finally done with FCS1, and no longer need it, I’ll refomat that drive and use it for my files again. But, I have plenty of externals so I might just leave it until FCS3 comes out.
Why have the older version? In case you are working with someone who only has the older version and you are sharing projects. IN case something doesn’t work in the newer version, yet still works on the older version (this happening more than I’d like to see).

Then backup your files, wipe the drive (or do an Archive and Install), install the OS from scratch, then FCS2.
Done.

July 16, 2007 at 4:58 pmmakes sense…but I don’t have two internal drives so if I leave studio 1 on with OS 10.4.8 and QT 7.1.3, will they conflict with
studio 2 requirements? -

July 16, 2007 at 5:59 pmNo. When you install FC Studio 2, it will overwrite previous versions of FCP, Motion, STPro, etc.

July 16, 2007 at 6:21 pmOk, fellas… Let’s not make this too complicated.
The best way to upgrade or do a clean install is use or purchase a firewire drive (about 160 gig) and use Carbon Copy Cloner on your system to make a clone of your current system drive. Then you can either upgrade or do a clean install. If something goes wrong, just boot to the backup cloned drive and you’ll be right back where you started.
This is the best method for any major upgrade including an OS upgrade. Sure keeps the headaches to a bare minimum.
