For anyone looking for this in 2020, I had the same ‘problem’. I needed to alter an old file which I had stored on an external drive. This changed the path to the files and thus caused the error. All the files were there but I got the same message. I’m working in AE 17.5.1

it’s not 1. or 2.
It doesn’t happen all the time. Sometimes after I save the Ae project and reopen it it works normally.
It’s working ok now ????
BTW I’m on the 17.0.1 Ae and 24.0.2 Ai.

I don’t think you can use more than 3 bones+1 controller to create IK. If you use more than 3 bones you get the above error message.
Your approach seems legit, I’m going to try it! Do you have a link to a decent tutorial maybe ☺
