I’m building my dream system right now. Everything in this system is as I’d like it, except for storage…

    G5 2.7
    4GB Ram
    2×400 GB Sata
    2 23″ Cinema Displays
    Sony 14″ d-series monitor
    Tascam audio console
    2 800GB G-Raids
    Kona 2
    Kona IO
    Kona KBox breakout box
Panasonic 32″ HD LCD client monitor
    Peavey speaker system with amp
    Panasonic DVCPro50 VTR – 930B
    Sony BVW-1800
    Two new plush client/nap chairs
    coffee table
bookshelf for all the awards I plan on winning with this system

P.S. Not only are we installing two of these, but getting an SDX900 also….GOSH I LOVE EDUCATIONAL GRANTS!

can the 20″ monitors do HD editing? I was under the impression that the 23″ was needed to display HD video.

I’m tall, 6’4″, so the tier system actually helps me from looking down too much. The way my set-up is now, my production monitor is so far to the right, the nerves in neck hurt at the end of a day from turning my neck so much. Hopefully I can put the editing monitors, as well as the production monitor on the same shelf.

    Walter,

Please tell me how I can talk my boss and chief engineer out of getting a $5000 PVMD-14″ Sony monitor.

Big difference between render now versus rendering 11 years ago.

The thing I’m going to miss most when I’m finally provided a new G5 with FCP, I’m currently on a 11 year old Media100, is getting near the end of projects and needing to render them out. This is a great reason to take a long 2 or 3 hour lunch. I’m able to say “I’m rendering out a project now, there’s nothing I can do anyway…I’m going to lunch.” Then they, the bosses, ask me, “When will it be done?” As to which I reply, “Don’t really know, but I’m guessing a few hours, the project was 2 minutes long…that’s a long render!”

I’m not looking at the “possible” negatives here. What I see is more bang for your buck. These new 2.7’s are prices the same as the old 2.5’s. But, you get a much better video card, more storage, and twice the drive speed…seems like Apple is giving us a present. I’m spec’ing out two FCP workstations, and this made things alot easier. Sure, I want a 3 GHZ as much as the next guy, but I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

They are touting ProHD as not a format…but a technology for shooting video. I don’t really know what that means, but I know one thing…In order to edit JVC’s version of HDV, which is with the ProHD technology, you have to have Lumurie. One of the new features of FCP5 is that it edits HDV natively…but not ProHD? I never could get a good answer to anything about that.

No doubt…I totally agree. Why go HDV when you can go full HD? Panasonic and the P2 I think hit a home run. Thier booth wasn’t over exciting, especially compared to mister king kong Sony, but what they had to offer got my attention. I think P2 might not outsell XDCAM, but it will be the better of the two tapeless formats.
