May 12, 2005 at 3:05 am in reply to: CHEAPEST/BEST COMPONENT INPUT SCENARIO for KONA 2Yes, I’ve been very, very happy with the DM24. There are lower-cost solutions without all the bells and whistles (Oh c’mon, everyone needs 5.1 surround support!). I know Yamaha makes some that would fit the description you’re looking for. I’d check them out first. Then maybe Roland, but I think your best bet is Yamaha.

[walter biscardi] “Not completely necessary but certainly a nice option and the SDI signal is a bit cleaner. I have it installed on my PVM20L5/1 and it does have a better image than the Component, especially when working with digital originated footage.”
I’m not sure how this is completely possible. Consider the fact that the optional SDI card for the 20L5 is doing the same exact things as either (A) an AJA converter box or (B) the YUV analog output from the Kona2 itself. Both the Sony card and the AJA hardware are converting 10-bit uncompressed video to YIQ analog space (NTSC) in the end. After all, the CRT tube *is* analog! There’s a point the digital stream becomes analog. As we all know, AJA has the best darn tootin’ conversion hardware out there. I don’t see how Sony’s card, performing the same exact task could be any better.

Yes, I read the QT Pro tip yesterday in the newletter. Very good tip indeed!

Thanks for sharing the tips. Looks like the AJA site is up to date then. 10.3.8 looks like the holy grail for Panther then since there wont be a 10.3.10 (I suppose). But hopefully this is moot anyway since Tiger development is key right now. Tiger + FCP 5 + Kona2 should be pretty darn cool. But in all honesty, I’m pretty content with how things are right now anyway in Panther.

May 11, 2005 at 1:50 am in reply to: CHEAPEST/BEST COMPONENT INPUT SCENARIO for KONA 2Ooooops! I always forget about the audio! I have everything routed to a Tascam DM24 digital mixer so its got all the analog and digital I/O there that I could ever need. So yeah, you’d need a Flying Cow or something. Looks like the AJA iO LA is your best bet.
Stupid audio, stupid audio!

I thought QT7 is supposed to have built-in capture functionality. I just installed Tiger on its own internal SATA drive on the main edit suite G5 so I haven’t had time to play with it yet.

I’ve been tempted also to bump up to 10.3.9 but their website makes it pretty clear that 10.3.8 is the latest blessed version. Of course, I don’t know if that information is old or not. Sounds like Jerry has had good luck with it though. Makes me want to try it too and live on the wild side! Of course, hanging out with Jerry always involves being on the wild side.

Interesting predicament. I guess the purchase of QT Pro wouldn’t supply this as well. Hmmmm.
And don’t tease me… I know this multiple “camera angle” shoot is just a recipe for a dirty movie. Please send Jerry and me a copy for “approval” when you’re done. Gary might want one too, just for safe keeping.

May 10, 2005 at 11:00 pm in reply to: CHEAPEST/BEST COMPONENT INPUT SCENARIO for KONA 2Tony beat me to it. I’d suggest the same thing. In our main edit suite, we’re using a Kona2+Kbox solution, but for the old Beta SP standby that will never go away, we can either use our AJA iO (big version) or our trusted-tried-and-true AJA D10A 10-bit YUV to SDI converter with the Kona 2. The beauty is that these little things are swappable and portable. I’ve been using these AJA converters since my first acquisition of our original Kona SD a few years ago (which is still here too BTW). AJA hardware is top-notch. Always has been, always will be.
Just run a few 1′ BNC cables from the deck to the converter, then run a long single SDI cable from the converter to your K2. Neat and tidy. No fuss. All 10-bit. Beautiful. End of story!
