I’m putting together a solution to capture six live 1080i HDSDI camera streams onto a SAN using the DVCPro HD codec. These six “camera angles” will be edited together using the new FCP multi-cam feature on a single FCP 5.0 workstation. My problem is this. In order to have the DVCPro HD Codec on the five capture-only workstations it appears I will have to purchase six fully licensed copies of Final Cut Pro even though only one box will actually be doing any editing. It seems like a total waste of almost $5,000 !

Does anyone know of a way to license the QuickTime DVCPro HD codec without buying multiple copies of Final Cut Pro ?

I’d be interested in knowing about this too… but figure that there’s no mechanism to accomplish it.

Interesting predicament. I guess the purchase of QT Pro wouldn’t supply this as well. Hmmmm.

And don’t tease me… I know this multiple “camera angle” shoot is just a recipe for a dirty movie. Please send Jerry and me a copy for “approval” when you’re done. Gary might want one too, just for safe keeping.

It’s interesting the “thinking” that goes on here at the Cow, but actually it’s for a Church in Ft. Lauderdale !! (I’ll send you guys a copy of the first completed production !)

    Hey Jerr,

Do you know of an inexpensive generic capture app (like BMD and Pinnacle have) that works with Kona 2 ? This is, of course, the “other quandry” in building a multiple camera capture system around Kona 2.

I thought QT7 is supposed to have built-in capture functionality. I just installed Tiger on its own internal SATA drive on the main edit suite G5 so I haven’t had time to play with it yet.

    ???

I have both Tiger and Tiger Server sitting here but haven’t had time to “play” with either one. Please let me know what you discover in the way of capture capability once you get the chance !!

    Bart,

How are you dealing with Jam sync timecode issues? How will you feed tc to all the workstations using your method?

The only other option I can think of is Virtual VTr which if I recall correctly had the ability to deal with multiple streams.

NO it does not ( at least yet) and a note for all of those asking about this
Phil Hodgetts posted this as part of the LAFCPUG newsletter yesterday

this works like a charm and I want to thank Phil and Michael for including this to the masses

As most of you know Quicktime 7.0 is out, but installing it will disable
your QT 6 pro Key, thus taking away all the very cool

How are you going to capture then Bart? IF you have V4.5 it is the same DVCPROHD codec so there is no reason to upgrade the capture only machines. ( and a tad safer in the short term)

and you are talking about a 6 camera Live shoot in HD and you are complaining about
$5K in software? — thats less than what the camera package rentals will be (probibly less than the lighting truck too)
